kaijupuppy — Disabled Bay Stamp

Description Stamp says the following:
"Do you have legs?
Can you use them?
Are you perfectly healthy?
If you said yes
then I have a suggestion.
Think of someone other than yourself.
Do not park in handicapped spots.
They are not for you.
They are for disabled people."

As someone with a disabled parent, this drives me insane. Especially how people try to defend themselves - "I was only going to be a minute" or "my elderly parent is in there". Yeah fucking right, kid.

Back in the good old days in England and America. We didn't have handicapped parking spaces or anything that gave the handicapped special treatment. If a handicapped man or someone with an elderly handicapped family member decided to park between two other cars. They had to just suck it up and use the backdoor to get out of their car. It was rather bloody amusing.

it's about people using disabled bays who shouldn't. if you have the need to it doesn't apply to you!
I apologise that this isn't more inclusive of invisible disabilities - it was made a long time ago. If I made it now it'd be different, but I've never been particularly good at phrasing stuff.
I have an invisible disability myself haha... so I understand

This happens to me and my dad a lot especially since I can't walk or drive so he takes me wherever I need to go and there'll always be that one guy who'll park in a disabled spot. This annoys me and my dad a lot by the way

I agree with this, but I also want to point out that not all disabilities are visible. My friend gets chronic costochrondritis, and having had it once myself I can vouche that ANY movement feels like you are being stabbed in the sides. She has a disability placard for that and her fibrosis. She has gotten yelled at a few times, even with the the placard, because she doesn't "look" disabled.

I entirely agree and am very aware not all disabilities are visable. I hope I did not in any way imply that you have to "look" disabled in order to use a disabled parking space.
The only intention I had when making this stamp is to say if you aren't disabled, you shouldn't be parking in a disabled bay. A disability is a disability no matter how disabled you "appear".
I am very sorry for the treatment of your friend. It's disgusting that people try to decide who is and isn't disabled based on appearance. It's beyond ignorant.

Thank you for your comment.

That's ok! I wasn't sure whether or not you were just saying or if I had actually phrased something poorly, so I just wanted to make myself clear! (:
Nonetheless I think I may add something to the description, as unfortunately it DOES need pointing out that not all disabilities are visible.
But anyway, it's fine - your comment was very well phrased and made a very good point. More people need to consider that disabilties exist that we can't see.

I agree with this message, in my country, some Malaysians use to park at the handicapped spot or 'tempat letak kereta untuk OKU (Orang Kelainan Upaya)' because they think that all parking spots were full. In my opinion, that's not right to do like that. They should think of disabled people before they act.

I 100% agree with the message of this stamp, but I do just want to point out that missing/crippled legs aren't the only reason why people need to use the handicapped parking spots.

A good example is M.E, a condition commonly known as chronic fatigue syndrome- my friend suffers from this and as a result she literally can't walk for more than a few minutes at a time. She tries not to use her wheelchair whenever possible, so when she's walking she needs to use disabled parking spots as she simply cannot walk the length of a large carpark and then all around a shop. She walks absolutely fine which means she could come across as able-bodied, but the act of walking tires her so much that she really needs to use the handicapped spots or she would have no choice but to use her wheelchair permanently.

Another example is O.I, commonly known as brittle bones disease. Both my mum and I have this condition, and being able to use handicapped spots has made a massive difference to us. Due to the stiffness of my mum's back she can't just squeeze into a car door, so when people park right up against your car it makes it impossible to get into the car unless there is someone with you able to drive the car out of the parking space before you get into it. As I'm too young to drive, there have been many times when we've been forced to wait until the driver of the other car returns and moves their car before we can leave! But my mum can walk absolutely fine, and I walk ok with the exception of a slight and painless limp due to an old injury that healed improperly, so we've often been told we have no right to use handicapped spots.

I hope I'm not coming across as offensive by posting this, but I felt like this should be said. I do completely support the general message you put across though, truly able-bodied people parking in handicapped spots drives me mad!

kaijupuppy In reply to Siilentpaws [2015-09-04 09:39:26 +0000 UTC]

No, I totally agree! I apologise for not representing these things - it was very much meant to be a blanket statement saying "if you aren't in any way disabled, don't use them", albeit poorly phrased.
I am highly aware that leg-related disabilities and being wheelchair bound aren't the only forms of disability that qualify use of a disabled bay.

I made this a fair while ago and, at the time, wasn't sure how to phrase it - my mind was mostly on my mother, with lifelong hip problems. I suppose if I made it now I'd phrase it better.

I definitely understand people can appear able-bodied! I certainly wouldn't bother someone who parks in a bay and has a badge unless I have a real reason to suspect it isn't theirs beyond "oh, they don't LOOK disabled" - it's rude and not my place to question the validity of someone's "disabledness", no matter how many dickheads park in bays whilst using a badge that isn't theirs.

I think in no way your comment was offensive! I realise my stamp doesn't represent everyone, which isn't great, and have thought that about it for quite a while. I'm glad the general message gets across, but I am very sorry that I couldn't properly represent all disabilties. This was perhaps ignorant on my behalf, as I assumed others would "fill in the blanks" and know that there are disabilities beyond legs and wheelchairs. I assumed the general point would be made but the phrasing is a little specified. I may at some point update the image - which I thought about many times, but am still honestly unsure how to phrase it best, the main reason I've just kinda left it.

Thank you for your comment! Sorry if my reply is terrible, I'm half asleep haha.

Thank you so much for this!
My mum is in a wheelchair, she has one leg.
This literally happened yesterday. We saw a guy that we had already spoken to about parking in the wrong place, but yesterday we saw him there again. Drives me crazy.
Also at places with changing rooms, there are disabled ones, and people always go in there because they are bigger.

I remember being at Costco and there was a man in a wheelchair. now, it was crowded, and I was a bit uncomftorable, and he was in my way, but u know what i did? we were by a sample area and he couldn't reach, so I handed one to him, and he let me by.

I agree with u; use yer freakin' legs!

Unless it's an emergancy/unless you are handicapped, don't fucking park in the spot. I swear, some people are just so selfish and ignorant.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kaijupuppy In reply to xxPaintedSkyxx [2011-08-29 09:05:33 +0000 UTC]

Exactly.
It's stupid that people seem to think that they have the right to park there, and those who are handicapped have some sort of "special" thing that they don't. Well, sure, you're correct there; they have the inability to walk very far (or at all) without pain.
The simple selfishness of the act kind of speaks for humanity and how most people think.

I agree. I know two handicapped people, and it's extremely rude when people (those who aren't disabled) take those spots.

Shadow-of-Burakku [2011-07-10 10:33:36 +0000 UTC]

I'm not perfectly healthy, my walking's limited, and I don't care about using handicapped spots. Been cut off by a driver coming in the wrong way 'cause he just had to get that spot up front, regardless of whether or not it was legal, and tried making a scene 'cause I had Right of Way and was trying to exercise said right. If people are gonna be assholes about regular parking spots, then I really don't want to bother with handicapped ones unless I really need to.

Ugh I hate this so much, and the story with the war veteran makes me sad it reminded me of when I was recently at Disney World, the 'Test Track' ride was broken, so there was a long waiting line. And 2 girls speaking portugese or whatever CUT in front of a teenage girl in a wheelchair, right where the whole world could see it.. how effed up? >> we even told staff about it, and they didn't do a darn thing.

I completely agree with this stamp *favs* even when I was under 10 years old whenever I went out with my grandparents I would help them walk, open doors, and etc.

Mmn... it's really horrible. I mean, the parking spots are just one thing. I really hate how people treat disabled people (especially people in wheelchairs it seems), like they're not people too, or that they're less important. :/

This is a very good point. If people are capable, then they shouldnt be abusing the rights of people who are uncapable.

Rescently, my Grandmother had a bad fall and hurt her ribacage. Today, me and my dad took her out for lunch to cheer her up. We where aloud to use the hadicaped spot (hospital gave her some kind of pass) , but my grandmother said not to. She said she is perfectly capable of walking, and some one else might need it.

I find it funny that my Grandmother, with an injured ribcage and the ability to use a handicaped spot but didnt and people with no injury or the right to use that spot figure that its fine to use it becuase , you know "wheel chairs arent that big of a deal"

What the hell has the world come to.

kaijupuppy In reply to BrokenRhymes [2011-01-30 19:54:59 +0000 UTC]

Exactly! I just don't understand why people think it's ok.
And I mean.. is it worth it? What happens if you get a ticket?
Funnily enough, my mother got a ticket once because she forgot to put her badge out on display. The annoying thing is that is about the ONLY time I have seen a car without a badge get a ticket....

And if your grandmother who actually had a pass can refuse to use a handicapped spot for people who can't walk well or use wheelchairs... I don't understand why a normal healthy person can't.
People just don't think, do they?
