I hardly can call the similarity accidental as I didn't used a reference for Kain, so there's no option the other person used the same model as me. I never used any stock models as I don't like the idea of referencing of an image many other people also used, first it's almost impossible to find a photo of a pose that fits the image I have in mind, second I don't feel comfortable with using models that are not for my own personal use only.
But reproducing someone else's painting pisses me off, it's only good for practise, but has no artistic value, and when someone claims it an own work, then it's just art theft.
Yes, I understand what you mean by painting an image after another painting, that's why I say copies has no artistic value. The original artists depicting something the way they see it, their own emotions, feelings and personal views are added to the image, while a tracer is simply copying something that's already adapted and personalized by someone else.
I used to seeked for tons of references too like a hand or a foot in that pose I needed it, sometimes photoed my own hands when I couldn't found anything better, but it was way too time-consuming spending hours with looking for the matching parts of bodies, so I gave that up
Using free stock images is not art theft, they were posted on purpose of being used by others, it's just one's own personal question whether it's bothering or not to work with an image many other people used too.
I didn't saw this film, sounds like it had a great twist by it's ending

Yeah, I think of it sort of like this, if someone
traces/copies an image that has heart, it's like
when someone it watching a fast motion(dancing,
running, etc.), and draws while watching, letting
the lines flow with the speed, but then another
person watches a video of the same motion, pauses
it, and draws the paused image, which invariably
looks dull and still, and holds none of the motion.
Like I said, I sometimes use tons of references
(anywhere from 5-30), and it's when I'm
uncomfortable. I don't think my understanding of
anatomy is very good yet, but when I do feel
comfortable, I don't use them. The images I don't
use them with are the ones I like more, invariably.
Maybe it's why I don't post anymore, I'm tired of
images where I've used heavy reference. I think
what I should do is get more anatomy books, spend
a long time getting a feel for anatomy and copying
tons of different body types in different poses, and
THEN try to make an image with what I've learned,
and without any references, so that it's all mine.
This is how I learned to draw hands and feet, and
spent countless hours on it, and now I don't use
references for them much. I always copy things as
private use~ Many beautiful images I see. 3 weeks
ago I wanted to get better at drawing females, and
quickly copied almost every Luis Royo image in two
of his books, and I learned several things about
them I hadn't noticed just by looking. When I was 8,
it's how I learned anatomy to copy every comic book
character 50 times a day xD And I suppose I should
admit, once when I was preparing to do a painting,
as a warm up I tried to copy one of yours(though
threw it away after!) So I think it's a normal way
to learn line and technique, trying to explore either
stock photos of people or to copy how many other
people have done in different ways.. But then, I
hated art classes, and didn't want to pay attention
or attend until I had a teacher who wasn't extremely
closed minded. Right now I'm mostly cunsulting
these([link] ) series of books when I'm confused
about how something works.
As for the movie, it was a cartoon in 3 one-hour
parts, perhaps the plot wasn't very in-depth, but
it was still pretty xD

Exactly, painting something based on personal impression is much different than tracing a photo, a traced stuff simply doesn't have a soul, it's nothing, but a technical show-off.
That's what was my problem with references, I had a lot of images around and made use only a tiny part of each, and they were only good for the main lines as the lighting and shadows were different on all images.
I understand the problem of heavy referencing, doesn't matters if others recognize where is the image referenced from when it's enough you know it, and don't feel the work completely your own.
Don't know if this helps with the anatomy [link] I didn't downloaded this as I don't make use of stuff that's not printed, so don't know how much is it helpful.
Hehe that's okay, although I don't know how much it worths to copy mine as many times I'm not sure in my own knowledge of anatomy too.
I did copied a lot of works of Vallejo, Julie Bell and Royo too for practise, mostly with charcoal or made pencil sketches of their works, I had studies in art schools, but if I wanted to learn anatomy, I had to do it on my own. It seems to be a general problem art teachers are hell closed minded, they only care with forcing on you their own preferred art style (avantgarde here) they were against developing an own style that was out of their preference, and teaching the basics of art such as composing, shading and anatomy was secondary. Practising with copying fantasy art was helpful, but I never felt these as own art, even if the result looked good, I missed the pleasure of creating something. Same about the Lord of the Rings portraits I made of the movie's characters as sketches for my graduation work, they're just copies many other fans also drawn too (all I like of them is the zombified Frodo because it freaks out his "oh-I-so-love-him" fangirls)

Yes.. Despite the moral wrongness, I can accept a
rip-off if it is beautiful, but as you said, it's
generally not the case-- they're usually devoid of
real emotion.
Thank you for the link! I've read bits of many books
on anatomy, and drawing the human body, and know most
general parts of of the general body, but since everyone
is so vastly different, it's not enough to know the
average... I wish I could see more very homely and ill
people, and study their different deformities.

I was very lucky two years ago, and met an art teacher who
was open to every art style she saw, and very honest with her
thoughts about them, and liked only things with skill. She
helped me a lot with starting to paint, since in her words, I
"sucked at painting," which I liked a lot. She didn't
want me to focus on any style she liked, and only showed me
a few techniques(our tastes were very different, but she
encouraged me to do what I liked) I'm still no good at painting,
but hell of a big step farther in the right direction.

And I see! Does Frodo have those fangirls? In his first
appearance in the movies, he and his creepy smile scared me.
It looked to me like this-- [link]
But I remember seeing Elijah Wood on SNL, and despite his
appearance he's pretty funny! So I don't dislike him at all.

Those teachers are really rare who can put aside their personal preferences when teaching, and not judging one's work based on their likes and dislikes. Creating art is a personal work, but teaching is about showing the technical side of art, a style is personal, everyone needs to develop their own.
I had only one teacher too who was helpful, I made my LotR coins with her guidance, she admitted she doesn't likes fantasy, neither LotR, but that's not her business to define my themes and styles, her job is to teach the technique.

Yes, the fangirling around Frodo and other characters was scary when the movies were out, and after the third movie was released and there were no more excited discussions about spoilers of the upcoming films, a massive fangirling about the actors took it's place. Quite put me off of visiting LotR websites that time when Tolkien's story became secondary, the main interest was about the "oooh he's so sweet" stuff about the actors.
I joined LotR groups that are hosting decent posts and not fangirling content, so luckily I don't see much of it, but the owners of the "oooh he loves my fancharacter" type stuff here [link] are damn scary.
Hahahaha funny image, the dino only needs a gap between it's teeth for the exact similarity
But I like the actors of the hobbits too, they were incredibly funny on the behind the scenes films.

I see! I only watched and read, and I didn't
really interact with other fans, or visit
websites, so I didn't know. (the only people
I know who like it are very level headed, who
like stories and not romance) Fangirlism is a
disease, though, and one I understand to an
extent(and suffer a few forms of), but some
things are just awful, like when they hassle
the actors, as captured here- [link] See the
grossed out reactions?

KainTheVampireLord In reply to yusr [2011-01-06 23:38:12 +0000 UTC]

I didn't interacted with other fans those times, and rarely had an internet access, I was seeking for available media stuff, and often saw things I didn't wanted to.
I'm talking to those fans too who have ideas and thoughts to share about the story, but ignoring the droolers and fangirls in groups.
The pairing mania is way beyond my understanding, that's really a disease when they take pairing up this and that character with each other or with a fangirl a major life issue, I saw a journal of a girl claimed herself a LotR fan, and got over-excited about reading Return of the King at last because it has "naked Frodo" in it and "gay Frodo and Sam" scenes. Where the hell she got that from.
Ewww I share their gross out. And it was handed to them in public. Wondering if people who're making these manips thinks it humorous (or in worst cases horny) but it's simply awful.

yusr In reply to KainTheVampireLord [2011-01-07 01:35:42 +0000 UTC]

I see. I understand the pairing mania,
however, and frequent the /y/boards and
Aarinfantasy forums to feed it. The only
thing I don't understand is pairings with
no romantic compatibility, yet there are
people who support them and think they make
sense 100%. It's fine even if they made it,
but it's just rude to hassle the actors with
it. They should consider the feelings of
the actors.

DarkSojin In reply to KainTheVampireLord [2010-12-20 03:02:10 +0000 UTC]

Well I think the reason for that is because the snow is white like how the original pillars looked before they were decayed and corrupted. If Nosgoth really existed, I'd brave the cold just to see the snowfall there. lol. :3

KainTheVampireLord In reply to DarkSojin [2010-12-20 17:32:43 +0000 UTC]

Yes, and all wintery scenes are playing in the Ancient's era before the corruption set in, but even if the land feels pure and uncorrupted, it's still a sinister world. There's really something chilling mysticism in the Nosgothian winter I like so much whenever playing the games

DarkSojin In reply to KainTheVampireLord [2010-12-21 05:31:52 +0000 UTC]

That is true. *Just got finished playing defiance for the umpteenth time in a row* But the Pillars wouldn't look as nice if they were gray and decayed the covered in snow. It's like snow covered...dirt. But yes, mystical and evil, sinister and compelling all in one. Definitely is a drawing place.
