Description F o r m a t i o n

Don't ask about the name, I don't know if i'm gonna keep it yet.

This piece was just supposed to be something for me to show off my new asteroids that I made in 3dsm, but it kinda grew a little from there. The piece is nothing too fancy, yet I like it a lot. I especially like the placement of the asteroids. The asteroids are supposed to be the ring of the planet it's orbiting, it was my first time doing a planet ring with 'real' asteroids, so it took a little trial and error before I got things right.

It's too bad though, because I made this awesome planets to only have it covered up by asteroids, which kinda sucks. Oh well, at least I got a new technique out of it. :/

Well that's enough babbling from me, enjoy the piece.

PS: I tried to make it brighter for those who can't really see my pieces that well, hope it makes a difference.

Edit: The flare in now behind the planet instead of being in front of it, removed the motion blur from the asteroids, and I also lightened up the shade on the planet so you could see it better.

I really like the lighting. It looks like the rocks are gonna come out of the screen. Like something from a movie.. (If that made sense) Really eye-catching Β

Great job! Β

Niceness!!
Was the entire scene in Max or edited in photoshop in some way?

Thanks The asteroids were created in 3smax, everything else was made in photoshop

Awwkay.
If it was a complete max thingy, It would have given me more hope. XD But your picture still does.
But the better it is, the more rendering time and seeing as it's part of a movie, this will take a huge long time. -_-

Composed very nicely here. One thing tho, the asteroids are lit very uneaven, some stones that appear in the front has less light than those behind etc.

Overll a really well done piece, good job

Lovely colors and I dig the planet. It bothers me a lot the flare is on top of the planet, especially because I think it's shape and color are really good.
I think the asteroids that go behind the planet, shouldn't be so big. I think the asteroids further away should only be visible as part of a ring and you shouldn't be able to distinguish between different asteroids. Also, I think there shouldn't be a curve in the asteroids ring in the foreground. Because we're so close to the actual ring, there should be no curve visible.
I hope all that made sense to you. I really like this piece, but I'm just trying to help you.
Good work!

Thanks for the advice man, i'll be editing the piece today to make some changes to it. But I gotta ask a question first, are you talking about the flare part, or just where the light source is? Because I do like how the flare is in front of the planet and shining on it, it kind of adds to the piece.

19-10 In reply to Kaioshen [2007-07-22 16:08:20 +0000 UTC]

I was talking about the flare part and where the light source is. The flare should be on the light source and the light source can't be on the planet. Stars do not sit on planets But do whatever you like..

SamODJ In reply to 19-10 [2007-07-22 16:30:07 +0000 UTC]

Whilst I get what you're saying, keeping the light arcing over the planet is an effective way of illustrating realistic lighting setups; kind of like in the way you get a flash of light right before an eclipse.

19-10 In reply to SamODJ [2007-07-22 20:04:33 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm, but can the brightest, most fierce light source actually be on the planet?
Whatever is most realistic, I just thought it look really weird.

this is a good quality piece.. very good work here! Like your planet and the overal lightning is outstanding. Only thing that bothers me is that the flare seem to be ON the planet and not behind it.. or is that the meaning? but then: what causes the light?
