Description
If you've seen episode 4 of the Legend of Korra, you no doubt are aware of what happened with Bolin and Eska. Needless to say, the girl does not take being rejected well.At ALL.
Poor Bolin. He can take solace in the fact he has at least a 5 minute head start.

I'm not really impressed by Eska. I feel like they are sorta of trying to make her like Azula, all calm and cold on the outside but crazy on the inside. But where Azula really came across as some kind of child protege that was slowly losing her mind, Eska is just a spoiled brat who just couldn't stand the idea of anyone not obeying her and then has a tantrum when Bolin says no. Also where Azula was a good fire bender, she was not unbeatable. She faced set backs and defeats through out the show, Eska on the other hand is treated like she is invincible or something. I mean for God's they had an earth bender, a fire bender, a martial arts master, and the Avatar on that boat and they still ran away. Β
The only way for them to save Eska is for her to leave her father and brother and give her a chance to develop her own character.Β

KairiTheValeyard In reply to aceking90 [2013-11-03 21:52:19 +0000 UTC]
Well, considering where the boat was, there isn't really a whole lot Bolin could do in terms of Earthbending unless he's willing to do a bit of metalbending on the side, whih given where they were would be a bad idea. Also, for her to be out there on her own without the aid of a waterski of any kind, while CLEARLY pissed right the hell off-- I don't care if Chuck Norris, Mr. T, Bruce Campbell, Asuka Langley Sohryu and Neville Longbottom are on that boat with me, the boats gonna be doing Mach 5 in 3 seconds.
Given what's been happening with the show lately though, it seems that they will do something significant with the twins, as clearly Desna is not on the same page as his father and Eska may be fleshed out more.

But in the next episode Eska and her twin actually try to fight Korra head. Hell even Azula could only defeat Ang by shooting him in the back why he did his Salor Moon transformation (yet another reason Azula was the best character in the show), yet these two brats actually think they stand a chance and for a little while it looked like they did.Β

HotmanXXX In reply to aceking90 [2013-11-17 16:26:45 +0000 UTC]
Because Azula didn't actually defeat Aang before that... oh wait, she did. In the Drill, they went one on one and she wiped the floor with him, only losing due to interference.
Azula was portrayed as borderline invincible- even when chasing her down, Aang and Toph was having problems against Azula without bending. Eska is not even among the top 5 waterbenders in LoK(Korra, Tarrlok, Amon, Umanaq, Tornaq).

KairiTheValeyard In reply to HotmanXXX [2013-11-25 16:25:40 +0000 UTC]
I dunno if we can really say she 'wiped the floor with him' in "The Drill, as from my POV, it was a fairly even match. The rock that stopped the two from concluding the battle did not really help matters. And given who trained Azula, not to tion her given personality, its not so hard to see why she would be tough to defeat. But the key word to remember is "nearly": She had an advantage over the others in "The Chase" by constantly chasing them and giving them little time to rest. But when faced off against Aang, Katara, Toph, Sokka, Zuko AND Iroh, she had no choice but to use a sucker punch like move to escape.

You left out the part where a random spirit came and whisked the Avatar away....
Β
ALSO: Azula never really took Aang head on after the first couple of times she fought him, or without some kind of advantage or delaying tactic. Hell, if you recall she was practically delaying Aang, Toph and Sokka during the Day of Black Sun. She's dangerous because she learns fast from her opponents.

aceking90 In reply to KairiTheValeyard [2013-11-14 11:39:25 +0000 UTC]
Yes I know why Azula is dangerous and that just proves my point of why Eska is a bad villain. They try and make her look all bad @$$ by having her fight the avatar head on and it looked like that she and her brother were going too win. (Of course it seems that they can never actually just let Korra win a fight.) It's like those two were meant too be some unbeatable force, which is of course just silly.

HotmanXXX In reply to aceking90 [2013-11-17 17:23:29 +0000 UTC]
...Azula was far more powerful, from first appearance to last, compared to the heroes. Azula schooled Aang, Suki and Zuko several times. Her defensive fire techniques stopped the combined assaults of Aang, Katara, Toph and Zuko.
Azula was so overpowered that Ty Lee and Mai were not really needed, because Azula on her own was enough to handle the entire team for almost an entire season.
Compare to Eska, who can't even beat Korra one on one.
Or lets forget that she and her brother together were incapable of beating their uncle. Or that they would both had been laughingstocks if they had been there to challenge Amon, or even Tarrlok.
Azula was ridiculously overpowered in her portrayal, and only Ozai, and end of series Aang was a match.
These two twins, taken one by one, are the weakest villainous benders with a decently huge role.
The only weaker ones where that jerky Pro-bender, and some of the named gangsters.
Complaining about Eska being overpowered while praising Azula is hilariously backwards.
The twins together can barely match Korra.
But not:
Korra's father.
Their father.
Tarrlok.
Amon.
Azula can match or beat Aang during most of ATLA, and only Ozai could beat her outside Aang. Iroh never showed anything implying he was her equal, for all that they talked about it.

Iroh was better than Azula during last air bender.Β
He had retired and was mostly joking and leaving fight for other for most of the series but there is a reason he is the dragon of the west. And there is also a reason why he was the favorite of Azulon over Ozai.
Unrusty Iroh could match Ozai, it's said at the end of the series. Azula was not her father's lvel yet.
But I don't doubt she caught up or even exceeded them when she was an adult given how skilled she was.

Β Azula often faced set backs and was out matched by the Avatar state, which is why she shoot Aang in the back. Also she never defeated her uncle or Toph in a one on one fight. On top of that Azula was a prodigy, shown to excel at nearly everything and that played a pretty big role in her story arch. But Eska is just a slightly better than normal teenager and yet they act like she is a force to be recond with. She and her twin actually try and fight the Avatar head on and for a little while it seemed like they actually had a chance.Β

KairiTheValeyard In reply to HotmanXXX [2013-11-25 16:53:22 +0000 UTC]
Uh, remember her first appearance, when she had nearly killed Zuko on the ship? Iroh kinda insured that it would happen the way she wanted, but then again when you can effortlessly redirect your niece's lightning blast AND toss her off, it kinda says something. The only real reason she called upon the services of Ty Lee and MAi was because of the fact there was some things that she wanted delegated to others and her friends, or tools as she probably saw them, were better than any of the subordinates she had.
Β
And even Azula and Zuko together had a lot of trouble subduing Iroh. It took the combined efforts of Azula's newly acquired Dai Li to get him, and that was only because Iroh was delyingthem all so that Aang could be evacuated out. If Iroh had been serious, IΒ think the fight would have gone way differently. Iroh, when he is very battle ready, is not someone to ever underestimate, as Azula has found out before:
Β
Iroh: Did I ever tell you how I got the nickname "Dragon of the West?"
Azula: I'm not interested in a lengthy anecdote, Uncle.
Iroh: It's more of a demonstration really.
Β
Azula, while one of the most dangerous opponents in the series, also tends to underestimate people or things she can't control; it happened with Iroh, with Mai and, ironically enough, Zuko at the Western Air Temple (the two fought to a draw)
Β
Now, before EITHER OF YOU TWO CONTINUE, can I just ask you two one question: How the hell did we go from a quick, funny picture involving Eska's kind of defining scary moment into such a seriously nerdtastic discussion about who's the most powerful sociopathic bender? Really, can you just look at the picture and, you know, FREAKING LAUGH?!!!

You're right we should never have gotten so involved with this argument. Also the worst villain in the show is Ozia since he never does anything. He is suppose to work from the shadows but he should still be seen giving orders like the Star Wars Emperior or Dr Claw from Inspectur Gadget. But he never does, Hell he needed his wife to get him on the throne since he is too much of a loser to do it himself.Β

Situations in this show always seem a little funnier whenever Dessa and Eska are involved.
I get the feeling that she was designed as kind of a cross between Mai and Azula.
And after this episode, she'll probably be made into the new "Azula/Zuko" for this show.
Can't wait to see where all this goes, but it'll be fun to watch.
