You should try reading the comic and giving it a chance. It's actually quite good. Respectful follow-up to the film so far.

Yeah, but you gotta understand: I HATED the film. I understand now that its a very different take on the series (and lets face it, if you are actually gonna do a live action take on Mario, you will need to take some liberties), but the way that the film was written...lets just say that Bob Hoskins interviews on the movie revealed some interesting insights into the creators' thought process.
In any case though the comic does have a tough task ahead of it.
