What I remember about the invasion? What I remember about the invasion…

Ha, where do I begin?

I’ll admit, I didn’t have much faith in Operation Pyotr. Most of the troops saw, at one point or another, some black-market film or comic depicting the Americans as ferocious partisans, unwilling to surrender and willing to burn their own homeland to the ground before the ‘godless communists’ took it from them. A lot like our grandfathers in the Great Patriotic War, if I’m going to be honest.

In the humid holds of the cargo ships sailing for Anchorage, for San Francisco, and for Seattle, we couldn’t help but wonder how the Politburo even thought this was ever going to work. America was an entire ocean away. Many of us were fresh conscripts. We thought we were going to be slaughtered like pigs. We thought that within a few weeks, the Americans would push us back into the sea. Did any of us have any final doubts? Any cowardly, defeatist thoughts? Absolutely. Did we act on them? Never. The political officers, we knew, would have none of it, neither would the capitalists, even if we defected. Our fate, we assumed, was sealed.

 - Pvt. Dmitri Pasharovsky, from Crimson Tide: The Fall of America, a documentary currently in production

   It wasn’t.

A quick overview of the nations that now occupy the former United States:

- The Alaskan Soviet Socialist Republic - Annexed by the Union in the aftermath of The Collapse. Ostensibly, the Soviets will only occupy it “for as long as necessary,” and will merge it with the ASFSR as soon as “the situation deems it possible.” Outside of the Kremlin, most everyone suspects that Alaska will remain a permanent part of the Russian SFSR. Any claims that the RSFSR has no right to take Alaska for itself were drowned by the flood of Russian settlers. Today, 68% of Alaska’s population are of Russian extraction. History, it seems, can be a real bitch when it wants to.

- The American Soviet Federative Socialist Republic - The internationally recognized successor state to the old U.S. and the newest member of the Soviet family. When a fierce resistance movement throughout the Rocky Mountains and Great Plains threatened to bleed the Soviets dry, the untimely (and, according to some, unnatural) deaths of most of the resistance’s leadership bought the reds some desperately needed breathing room. Today, much of the Soviet Republic has been pacified, and Western America now stands as a proud example of communism’s inherent superiority over capitalism.

- The Federal Republic of New England - In the final, dying days of the U.S., the states of New England, as well as New York, decided to cut their losses and seceded from the Union. The U.S., for its part, was much too busy fending off both the Soviets and the many, many revolts to give a toss about New England. Today, the Federal Republic remains close to the Canadians, with some in the Senate going so far as to suggest joining their northern neighbors.

- The Hawaiian Republic - To be honest, barely anyone noticed when Hawaii quietly slipped away from the Union and announced its independence. Of the navy stationed when Hawaii seceded, most ships defected, while others were boarded and commandeered when they tried to fire on those they deemed to be traitors. Today, Hawaii remains little more than a faint blip on the Pacific, maintaining friendly ties with Japan and the Soviets.

- The Emergency Government of the United States of America - A Bible. A bomb. And a month that shook the world. That was the situation the military faced when it assumed control of the government after the entire line of succession was killed in the attack (Interestingly, the designated survivor was nowhere to be found. He’s still missing to this day). While the garrison in Chicago managed to contain the post-attack riots, most of the country rejected Arlington’s dictates and went their own way, falling to either chaos or the Soviets when they invaded. Today, the EGUSA is a pariah state, their focus now mostly directed to their neighbors to the south.

- The Provisional Government of the Confederate States of America - Much of the deep south was already engulfed by vigilante militias and unscrupulous scavengers when the Soviets invaded. A couple decades after The Collapse, transmissions were received by radios from across the former U.S: the Confederacy was reborn in Charleston, and would begin a campaign to restore order in the south. Though many warlords and militias armed themselves for their new contender, others flocked to the Stars and Bars, forming the backbone of the new C.S Army. Though the Confederacy managed to conquer much of northern Georgia and South Carolina, not to mention the declarations of loyalty from Mobile and Pensacola, most of the momentum from the first campaigns was lost. Today, the PGCSA is mostly concerned with establishing a safe supply line with their gulf territories and them dang Yanks to the north.

- Misc. Territory - As the military assumed control over the government, many hoped that life would continue on as normal. Then the electric grid went out. Then the faucets ran dry. Then the shelves went empty. Then the money. Then the safety. Then any hopes that America and the American people will make it through this disaster. And all of that was before the military authorized the use of WMDs to put down the revolts. The territory in black is dominated by tinpot warlords and their militias ruling over chemically-bombed towns and villages like mad despots. Territories on the border of this area, for all countries, are regularly flooded with refugees fleeing the constant violence and famine found in what many call “No one’s land”.

A quick little deviation I whipped up for Christmas. Enjoy.

As always, comments are encouraged and appreciated.

December 2022: This map is now outdated with plans for the rest of the universe. Expect a Redux sometime in the future.
