Description AltairSky is currently holding a contest about designing alternate hawkmoth-inspired armor for her medabot OCs.
If you don't know it yet, you definitely need to check out her comic!

Contest! Design a new Suzumega model! Here we go with a new art contest!
If you have questions, feel free to ask in the comments!
The "draw my oc" theme is getting old so let's try a new theme, and this time it's a design contest!
The theme is to design a new Suzumega armor for my characters Altair and/or Hummer!

Altair and Hummer current designs:

so you basically need to draw an alternate suzumega form/armor for them!
Suzumega = Hawkmoth in Japanese, keep that in mind! So no butterfly or bee or grasshopper, or random bug armor, I want hawkmoths!
DEADLINE: JULY 30
Rules:
There is only one rule! You need to base your model on a real hawkmoth! You can google for interesting hawkmoth species or use the references that I provided here: sta.sh/2pxb93e7ofy?edit=1<

Now, I have to admit that I'm far from an expert when it comes to the medabots franchise - literally everything I know about it comes from reading AltairSky's comic and occasionally googling some reference that I didn't get. But I do love robots, hawkmoths and these particular OCs, so I jumped at the opportunity to design something cool for them.

I chose the Daphnis protrudens  species because the coloration intrigued me - the blue belly, the reddish stripes on the underside and the wonderful olive-blue pattern on the upper side of the wings. Of course, the pattern needed to be simplified for the robot body, so I tried to capture the most prominent shapes and decided that the beige and olive parts would be done in color-shifting paint. The beige shifts towards green under certain angles, and the olive shifts towards blue. The blue-gray paint is supposed to be metallic, without color shifts.

For the red stripes on the ventral side, I figured they might contain some form of antigrav engines similar to those embedded in the wings of Altair's main armor. I also added the rotating engines seen on the other Suzumega armors - I hope it makes sense to have both, maybe for greater flexibility or an additional boost when needed. If not, then the red stripes probably serve some other purpose.

The medal hatch can be found in the beige triangle on the back. The weapons are similar to those of the existing models - some kind of blade on the right arm, and some kind of sniper rifle on the left. With my superficial medabot knowledge, I'm afraid I can't go into more details - I'll leave it to the real experts to figure that out.

For the general shape, I tried to keep it masculine looking without making it too bulky, and to find a good mix of angles and smooth lines.
I knew early on that I wanted a mostly triangular head - making my ideas for it work from all angles took some effort, but I'm happy with the result.
Also, I liked the display shape of the Benisuzume model, so I used something similar here.

This reference sheet was done in Inkscape, after some initial sketches in GIMP. It was a refreshingly different approach from my usual GIMP or Blender works, and I had a lot of fun with this one!

You did a great job with this design, thank you so much for entering!
The contest does not require any kind of new weapon design, so it doesn't matter if you kept the same weapons as the akahoujaku. It's actually better to play it safe and keep the old weapons, since designing an out-of-character weapon might actually lower the chance of winning.
