Description
So I made a tutorial with pictures...I built it to the rules of my LARP group. You may modify according to yours.
Feel free to ask any questions.
No, I am not a smith. This has not been made legal yet! Create on your own only after asking a weapons smith or an elder if this tutorial is relevant to your group. If you just play with some friends, then have fun and go ahead!
Good luck~

Hi!
I am larping, but in Sweden, and I got a bit curious on your safety rules system.
What is the purpose of padding the bow limbs? Are they used for parrying, or as a weapon?
Or are archers prone to firing their bow in close quarters, with the risk of accidentally hitting someone when the limbs fling forward?

The foam is there to keep from injuring people, not for combat. Where I use to play, we had an eye socket rule. Any blade tip, weapon tip or shield edge had to have enough foam so that if it made contact with the face it wouldn't injure the eye. Since the bow here is made out of PVC pipe, the ends of the pipe can be pretty sharp. We've had exposed pipe do all kinds of damage to weapons and shields including a sizable hole right through a tower shield. We also have a 10 foot rule. If the bowman is withen 10 feet they can't shoot another player. But accidents do happen, so its really just a precaution.

Eh. It works if what your doing doesn't allow real bows or you can't get one. I'd suggest using a stiffer PVC pipe if you can and remember to unstring it when your done.
I use a child's bow that I put pipe foam on where I fight. You also have to be careful, because these bows don't just tell you the strength. Going over 25 pounds is dangerous if you're actually hitting people.

Do you have any suggestions as I don't have a job (and can't for 3 more years) so are there any other suggestions because waiting twenty days of labor is hard and long.

Arrows you will have to buy. They have to be real ones, with the arrowhead removed. Different games require different rules. For example, the field I go to has you remove the head, put a penny and tape it down with electrical type. Then you wrap under the penny until you have about an inch or two of tape the same width of the penny. Cover that with PVC pipe instillation and put no less then 3 inches of bed foam over that. Our game requires you put cloth over the bed foam instead of ducttape. Arrows can be expensive, ranging from 2$ to 10$ and considering you're going to want a few of them it can get pricy. Luckily, I live near one of the places that sell them for 2$. Also, always get fiberglass arrows. Wooden ones break, especially because they will get stepped on.

Nice. Our problem was the whole thing had to be covered, we couldn't have the cutaway at the center. (Yes, I was a weapons smith ages and ages ago)

Its different where I go. Everything but where your hand goes has to be covered. Personally, I think that's completely safe. and almost better when there isn't so much bulk there to grip onto. When I'm using one handed swords with the padded handle I always feel like its going to be knocked out of my hands easily.

I'm with ya!
I just had to follow the rules, not agree. For whatever reason the handles at the ends of swords and polearms didn't have to be padded but the middle of bows and staves did. I know I never would have managed a hand and a half sword with a padded handle!

Thats kinda weird haha. Do you know why they did that? I can't seem to think of a reason why it would make any difference. See I'm like the second person to ever make a bow? So I have no idea yet if it'll be okay in my group yet. I'll see by Saturday though.

It was ages ago, they had an argument, I don't remember. Something about the middle being more likely to come into accidental contact?
I was the only female marshal and weapons smith in the group at the time, I spent my whole time with that crowd fending off arguments and others...

That sounds... Rather painful xD haha there is not a lot of ladies at my group.. No Lady elders or smiths either. I've been doing a lot of crafting though, maybe I'll become a smith after some time and break that chain lmao.

Well turns out it was too weak. I ended up getting a child's long bow and did the same thing, but slapped some end peices on that allow me to take the string off. Other then being to weak, though it passed.
