Description
My 3rd attempt at practicing drawing faces, as it's not my usual thing. I was a bit too ambitious!Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn from a really popular reference image – link below
For 'Middle Earth' competition.
Well I thought I'd have another go at portrait art to try and work on technique again as I have learned a lot since my 2nd attempt over a month ago! I took some measurements for the key bits to try and make sure it actually looks a bit like Viggo. I've tried to blend my shading a bit better and make sure my tone and contrast are improved from my last portrait. All my 'Work in Progress' pics are in my Scrapbook if anyone wants to see how I built up the drawing!
Major thanks to the Tutorials, hints and tips from the DA community, especially Meks , Rick (make those blacks..BLACK) and Li .
A4 Bristol Paper, 2H – 8B, Eraser, Blending things, Time (lots!) and frustration!
As usual folks, I'm really trying to improve and I think I have over the last 9 weeks, since I started; however there is still so much to learn!
Please comment and criticise, as it's the best way I can improve!
So far for me...this is my masterpiece!!
Kal
Reference Comparison:
*Re-uploaded image, just spent 10 mins on a couple of minor changes to hair bottom left and right as it looked horrible. It's a present for my dad, so I had to tweak...now being sprayed

One thing that I have learned over the years is that we all need to be our own worst critic. If you quit seeing anything in your work that could be better - you are done growing as an artist. If I were you though - I would be very happy with this one . It is a very well done drawing

Thankyou! I am happy with it, but as you said...I feel there is so much to improve!
I don't think I'll ever be 100% happy with things I do, because as you said, you can always improve!
Seeing the improvement is the major driver for me at the moment, maybe because it's quite early in my artistic hobby, so the improvements are still coming in reasonably noticable steps!
Later on, when I'm hopefully producing better stuff, the improvements may be more minor each time....but I'm getting ahead of myself. I appreciate the feedback and kind words, - Kal

Just keep learning !! I have seen many artists who have fallen into the trap of thinking that they are great because all their friends and family tell them so - and they have just stopped growing and learning, and will never get past where they are now. And that is sad just by itself - but think of all the fun they are missing in the discovery of new knowledge and new ways of doing things !!

Really good work, even though it's not exactly like the reference, it's my opinion that it doesn't have to be. You got the likeness of the character, and that's what really matters.
if it's not vital that you copy a reference exactly, you should feel free to change it however you want. A reference is a tool to help you achieve what YOU want to create. that's what you should try next :]

That's another scary step forward hehe. I did it with my Sci-Fi stuff, going from copying minatures and photo's to thinking something up, which was a big step for me. Going from copying references to changing them or changing positions on real human figures is scary! The human mind is so good at recognising figures and picking up details in form and facial features, that any small mistakes seem magnified At the moment I'm happy improving my techniques which aren't anywhere near where I want them to be. Once I'm happy with that and I've had more practice at drawing people, I may try and be a bit more creative heh!
Thankyou for the feedback and the kind comments though! It's lovely for me to get some feedback on what people think!

PS, the only thing I would tell you, to make hair more real, is not to "outline" some of the hanging strands (bottom right) so they look like bird feathers? It's a hundred things like that which will keep challenging you to learn from EACH drawing, just one thing you could have done better, and do it the next time Dunno if you used Bristol SMOOTH or Vellum (300 or 400 series) but I ONLY use Smooth 300 series. Again, awesome work! I almost drew this photo 8 months ago. Who knows...one day?

Doh, forgot to add thanks! I was struggling to end the 'locks' of hair to make them appear more real. I think if I faded them into the background more as you suggest they would look miles better! But as you said...improvement every time! ;D

I used my first piece of Bristol Smooth for this drawing! Not sure exactly what type, but it's 250lbs and smoother than a babies bum. Amazing to draw on! (The paper...not babies bottom's...it's a UK phrase )

lol wow I didn't even notice that you mentioned me above! Glad you got something out of it? If ppl just did ONE thing, to make their blacks REALLY DARK, it would take a drawing to the next level, yes? Thanks much!!

That's the exact phrase from your guide that was banging round my head while drawing this. It's now tucked away in there for all my future work! So you can have this little warm glow feeling now that you really have helped another person trying to improve their art. Thanks once again!

No small part to yourself hehe! Your shading Youtube videos were the basis for my attempts at blending on this one and I also tried to make my blacks 'Black!' because of you, which has really helped the contrast. My previous stuff looks a bit washed out and dull as I didn't go dark enough when it mattered. I hope you don't mind me crediting you in the text, but your stuff really helped me improve! Just keep doing your amazing works and I can keep enjoying them hehe.

Thanks! It's far from perfect, but it's a step up from my previous, so it's still ok! Face is a bit wide and the hair is horrible, along with my attempts at blending being a bit scratchy...so lots to improve on for next time!
Thanks for the comment tho!

Thanks! Awesome is a strong base to start from...so I feel better now
It's the bits near the bottom that look weak..I'm not sure how to end the 'locks' of hair? (if that makes sense) heh. The hair looks kind of cartoony, as opposed to simulating real hair, so it's something I have to work on

I'm glad you feel better now! Well. honestly, I have no idea how to do it too!
Hair is very hard to draw, I know it, for me it's well, the hardest part I guess! Yuu're doing great so far so keep up the good work!
