I recently realized that I haven’t drawn Amaya in a long time. Probably because I haven’t done much Avatar art in general. So when this day came along, I wanted to do something.Even though I prefer pairing Zuko with Amaya, I’m not going to ignore the canon fact that he and Mai have a relationship. I can totally see Amaya doing subtle things that would probably confuse Zuko and enrage Mai. Her secretly giving Zuko a flower while his currently girlfriend is right there would give her a lot of satisfaction.
While coloring this I realized what a contrast Amaya is compared to Mai. It’s not like I did that deliberately, I designed Amaya before we’d heard anything about season two. Just superficially, Mai prefers a red/black color palette, while Amaya likes red/white. Even their personalities differ vastly, they have very little in common. I just found it odd that when I imagined someone who would go well with Zuko, I came up with someone nearly the exact opposite of the one the creators eventually paired him up with.
Zuko and Mai from Avatar belong to Nickelodeon.
Amaya belongs to me.

I agree with you. Amaya would totally do something like that.
Personally, (if Amaya was a real character in the show) I'd prefer her to go with Zuko. Makes more sense.

I imagine it’d be the same as the other characters, some fans would like her, some wouldn’t, and others would turn her into some secretly emo cutter who is secretly eviler than Azula and is trying to break up their OTP! XD

I have the theory that Mi&Bri submitted to ZuMai simply for comedic purposes. You created Amaya for chemistry and sense.
But that's just my theory.

Haha, I like that theory. I don't have any hate for Mai, it's obvious they planned it from her intro. Still, I'm horribly biased when I say I like Amaya better. XD
