Description I think this pic is going to require an explanation...

and I were chatting on an IM a couple weeks back and got around to the subject of her university trig class. She didn't like doing proofs, and so I suggested that we find Dan, her favourite DP character, and get him to kill them for her. And because I seem to exude inspiration , she drew the lineart for this the next day, and sent it to me to colour.

I had a lot of fun with this, despite having only a touchpad to do everything and having never done highlights before. Cory coached me through that part. I know it's a bit rough in places, but overall I'm quite proud of how it turned out. Big achievement for me. Oh, and btw, that blackboard's all mine!

Yeah, that's what I think, but really I always thought before that logic and creativity were quite even and not slanted like that from each other. That's what surprised me.

Yup, as far away from maths as physically possible. I like writing too etc, but I don't think that I could rely on it to support me or anything like that. I was thinking just doing it as a hobby on the side of a graphics job or something like that.

I think your version of events is quite valid, I dunno if I was sleepy when I saw TUE, but I got fairly confused on that bit. It's nice to have a good explanation. I understood why he'd go bad with Plasmius, though. That guy's just pure bad news.

I remember being quite surprised when I heard of the split too.

I'm going to hold out hope that I can make it with writing and editing and my current job for a few years before I give up and get a "real job." I'm pretty confident I can pull it off. Sounds like you have a good plan, and who knows? Writing as a hobby could get you to to some pretty fun places as well.

Thanks. I remember it not being entirely clear either, but the point came across and that's pretty much all that's really needed in a kids' show.

Yes, when I got the result I remember just looking at it blankly before saying "What the...? That's not right!"

Good luck with your plan. I hope it goes well for you. Practically I read and write for a hobby already. I needed something to take my mind off the free time and video games I had. My friends think I'm mad for choosing reading and writing over it, but I don't mind. They know it's my thing and not theirs.

Thank you. I don't think you're mad for picking writing over gaming. Writing's more fun and more involved.

Actually I find my one odd too. I just don't get how I can be almost brain dead on my left side and still think about how everything works or this connects to that or etc... Maybe I use imagination wherever possible before applying logic, but that can't be right because I use logic sometimes just as much and currently using it to try and figure this mess out!

As for a job, I'll be happy as long as I enjoy what I do, keeps food in my stomach and a roof over my head. And... maybe the Internet running XD. Although I do have a soft spot for graphics and stuff like that. But you're right... it may change. Although I think anything extremely maths related will go pretty much untouched.

If it's a skewed hero complex, then that's an understatement. Although I think I like that theory. It solves my problem I have with Danny's ghost half going rotten the second it was detached from him. (seriously though, even under exceptional circumstances, I don't think I'd have let Vlad near me wearing THOSE things. O.o Looked pretty painful to me)
Well, of all the things I can say about Dan, the one that stands out is I wouldn't want to be waking up with him next to me on the pillow. (one of my Grandpa's favorite sayings for anything dangerous )

KaliPhantom In reply to Moonlight-Umbreon [2008-03-27 18:56:41 +0000 UTC]

I think your teacher was just trying to emphasize how active your right side is. If your left brain was braindead, the right side of your body would be completely paralyzed. I've never really understood brain theory to a good enough level to explain what each side of it does, actually, and that's a worrying through considering the three university classes that went over it.

That's pretty much what I'm going for with my career hopes too. The very basics. I've got a soft spot for words, so editing, writing, selling books (which is what I do now)… I stayed far, far away from math.

My personal version of those events, helped along by a few good fics, is that Danny was angry, hurt, and depressed when he was separated from his ghost half, and we know the ghost side of him tends to overdo things, overreact, not think things through, shoot first, etc. I also believe that ghosts feel emotions stronger than humans. Add those together, and he was pretty much destined to lash out at Vlad, and then when you add Plasmius into the mix… I wouldn't have let Vlad near me either. Those things are scary!

No, I wouldn't want Dan beside me either…

Thanks for the advice, seriously at least I know where to get the darn plasticine now. If I didn't get that I'd probably go on a fruitless hunt tomorrow... (heh, I'm not to good at searching, always overlooking stuff) And the cake tin thing's a great idea -goes through mum's pantry-

Generally my favorite subject is the one I get most bored at, English. I love it but my teacher just can't seem to dish out stuff fast enough. And when I say that, she gave us homework and I managed to get the classwork and the homework done in the same lesson.

Unfortunately my mum favors maths over English, so I kinda wish it was the other way around, so I could get maths work done easily. Unfortunately, it's not a great strong point, I'm not bad, but I'm not really good either. Plus maths gives that... 'unique' kind of headache... the one that makes your brain feel like it's in overdrive and that two more seconds you might find an alternative to frying eggs - by putting them on top of your head.

Yeah, my maths teacher's kind but strict. He'll make sure you learn the stuff, and his style's good, but it gets boring after doing something like... how many times was that? Sorry, I was so lost in repetitiveness that I forgot to keep count.

Now, if I was a bystander watching that picture happen, I'd probably be egging Dan on. Well, maybe not, but I like it as a fictional idea. -looks evil- (Uhh... no one saw that, right?)

KaliPhantom In reply to Moonlight-Umbreon [2008-03-26 17:15:16 +0000 UTC]

Welcome. I've had to go on plasticine hunts before, can you tell? Also, it's sometimes sold as "modeling clay."

English was mine too, actually. I think most people tend to work the fastest in subjects they like. I was always getting my homework done in class too.

Hey, I know that exact kind of feeling! It's people like us that calculators were invented for. Looking back, I wouldn't have wanted to be a math whiz, I don't think. It's got nothing to do with who I am and who I plan to be. But yeah, getting homework done quickly is a plus….

I like it as a fictional idea too. It's just fun to think of him doing that. See what?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Moonlight-Umbreon In reply to KaliPhantom [2008-03-27 10:19:10 +0000 UTC]

Oh no! I forgot to pick it up today! And I put a post-it note on the front door too... Ah well, I'll find some in the next few days.

Thinking of English and Maths, in science a few weeks back we did a test to see what side of our brain we use most. Right side being creative and left side being logical.
Apparently my left side is brain-dead in comparison to the right side which should be going to the point of electrocution. (well, not literally, but that's what my science teacher said XD)

Really the only reason I want to be extra-good at maths is for the sake of getting a good job, and according to mum, you need to be to become a game developer/graphic designer. I doubt this, but I'm not going to take my chances on it either.

About Dan, I just thought of something. Well, he's pretty evil, right? So why is he saying evil proofs? Logically it should be good proofs, or maybe it would fit better as aggravating? Oh never mind, I'm getting all technical again. I hate it when I go like that. -rolls eyes at self-

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KaliPhantom In reply to Moonlight-Umbreon [2008-03-27 16:36:49 +0000 UTC]

I've done a few of those tests too, in various places. I'm definitely left brained, though I'm not as polar as you seem to be. I find this odd, since I'm definitely creative… but I do have a logical slant on most things. :shrugs:

You don't have to be, no. We're going to need people who don't design games or graphics too. They are good fields to be in, but it's also possible that by the time you graduate there'll be something else that's good to get into. It also depends on what you define "good job" as. For instance, I have a good job, but am earning just slightly more than minimum wage for it.

I don't think Dan sees himself as evil. I think he thinks that no one's suffering who doesn't deserve. Some kind of very skewed hero complex. So I think he'd still have a perception of "evil" as being worse than him, definitely. Besides, I think we were using "evil" there in the slangy sense.

I wish he was blowing up the Pythagoras Theorum right now. Then I wouldn't have to do that darn assignment that's going to take a week out of my holidays to finish.

Great picture though, it gave me a laugh!

KaliPhantom In reply to Moonlight-Umbreon [2008-03-25 08:03:00 +0000 UTC]

Heheh, thanks! Glad you like the pic. What is it about the Pythagoras Theorum that's bugging you?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Moonlight-Umbreon In reply to KaliPhantom [2008-03-25 08:19:26 +0000 UTC]

-hugs back-

Oh, it's not the Theorum itself, it's more the fact that it's going to take a week to do. We have to make all these different examples.

-sighs- I could be drawing or writing, which to me is a lot more productive than going over a Theorum that I already know for about the thirteenth time this year.

I still can't help but think 'thank God it's not long algebra', though. If I was Dan and they gave me really long algebra something might explode.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KaliPhantom In reply to Moonlight-Umbreon [2008-03-25 17:07:15 +0000 UTC]

Ah, okay. Good to hear. (If you'd been struggling with the Theorum itself, I'd have been worried for you when you hit the long algebra and advanced trig.) What kind of examples do you need? Just lots and lots of triangles?

This is very true. I had to sit through hours and hours of going over stuff I knew. I was absolutely bored stiff and really frustrated (and in class I drew and wrote ).

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Moonlight-Umbreon In reply to KaliPhantom [2008-03-26 03:35:27 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, just lots and lots of triangles... And my teacher wants different materials so he can post pictures up in the maths classroom.

Let's see, there's painted wood, paper, plasticine, O.o one kid said he'd do it with sandpaper...

Gee, you name the material and it's something you can make a triangle out of, apparently. I don't have wood, I don't think I want to work with plain old paper and sandpaper curls too much to measure. So I went for -sighs- (now I regret picking it) plasticine.... Well, he wanted it colourful, I guess. Now I'm stuck with the dilemma of finding a shop that sells it, then molding it around fifty thousand times into perfect corners, then measuring the lot up and making sure they don't fall apart in my schoolbag. Fun!

I know the feeling with bored stiff, but our maths teacher is very alert and attentive. Not only can he notice if you're not listening or drawing etc, but he seems to possess what my friends and I call his 'sixth sense', because he knows when your imagination wanders. Maybe it's the vacant expression you get on your face, or your eyes glazing over and staring off into space, but he /knows/. Then you get him come over to you, says focus which usually snaps the person out of whatever they were thinking about, and continues.
I still gotta hand it to him though, after he explains it, you always remember. The best and worst maths teacher all in one.

Despite Trig and geometry being the worst of math, I hate to admit that I use both a lot now. >_<
