Description Was looking through my stash, and I realized that most of the tutorials/processes/"lessons" I do are mainly for people on my stream now, and I feel bad because dA has really helped me with growth and its where most people follow my work, so I thought I'd upload this process. I uploaded this on my twitter and put a stash link so that people could see the full view.

In all honesty, I don't actually follow this process. For me, I get bored really easily if I work on one thing too long, so I usually work back and forth on her, the objects, and the bg, rather than finishing her entirely and then working on say, the scythe.

Idk how much this helps, but it's a bit encouraging to see how much the results can change from the initial plan. For me, I didn't have much hope for this, but because it was for my friend, I had to push on. And in the end, it's probably one of my best pieces so far. So, thank you!

how do you make the lines look almost invisible in some areas? do you paint over it?

ah no -- coloring the lineart. Just preserve the opacity/lock the lineart layer or clip a new layer to it, and color with lighter color. I usually choose something that's just a bit darker than the surrounding color

Also my shading in general usually masks it pretty well.

wow~ so pretty *_* out of curiousity, what is the reason for the 2nd step where you put rough colour on the sketch? is that layer deleted later or does it serve a purpose for the whole pic?

its the colored sketch. she sketched then colored the sketch to rough out what color she wanted to use.

That's cool, I love seeing these processes pieces. I would show more of my process but I always forget to save intermediate steps. I do take some timelapses of my sketching/painting though, but that's a bit time consuming to put videos together.

On panel 4, why do you put those two base colors down on the scythe and on RWBY? I see a lot of artist do that when they go to color, does it affect the way you color or something?

Kanekiru In reply to Martinic [2015-10-31 21:48:10 +0000 UTC]

Ahhh for artists, it's just easier filling in the character. On SAI, if your lineart is thick enough, you can magic wand everything on the outside of the lineart, go to selection, and invert. Then, it will select the character and objects. It's a lot easier than just filling piece by piece, the different colors. I mean, you still have to base color the actual colors, but I don't have to worry about going outside the character if I clip a folder with my base colors, onto the yellow/greyish base layer. And it's like, you already have the base for skin.

Other artists will refer to is as "masking". I think if you look it up, you should find tutorials on it, and reasons why some people choose different colors to base like I did in the fourth panel.

I love this and thanks for sharing ^^ I have a question: do you always color the background after coloring the character? I always get the feel that I should color the background first to paint more accurately the character. But yours just looks so good before and after! So... what do you think is best? ;w;

Kanekiru In reply to Suneia [2015-10-31 21:44:49 +0000 UTC]

Nope! Like I said in the description, I am sooo impatient when it comes to coloring, that I have to move around and finish bit by bit. >< I might be coloring the ruffles, and 10 minutes later, I'm not done and I'm so bored, that I move onto the background to do some small things. I think, for me, it just helps me see that the overall piece is coming together. I have tried to color the character only, and then work on other things, but then the character stands out so much and it doesn't give me a sense of "what could I do more with this?" because as you can see, I didn't have a bg planned in the sketch stage. I didn't even know what to do at that time and it looked so blank...so, by taking some time to work on that, given a basic idea of shading, I managed to fill something in. Plus, it also made me think, "If this is night time..she would need extra shading".

Thank you!
