Description Follow me on my blog! [link]

These are my interpretations of the characters based on the book "The Hunger Games" that I was working on in August. Don't think I'll get back to working on these, but who knows? These characters still need work and I have some more characters I was supposed to design, hopefully I'll still find time to go back to this project..

From left to right the characters are Rue, Peeta, Katniss, and Gale.

Will update with initial sketches/ideations soon.

Rue is the perfect combination of cool and preciously cute, and Gale has a kick-awesome cyber-arm and rope dar throwing star(I'm assuming that's what that is).

Just when you think the Hunger Games can't get any better...

This is so cool~!

Such an interesting interpentation...it made me start imagining the HG in a setting where the character would really look like this. More sci-fi...or something.
Actually...this might work well for the series now...huh.
You gave me so much to think about.

I love this! Your style is great! I love that you made it more futuristic rather than today's style. Hunger Games does take place in the future and people seem to forget that.

Thank you very much! Yes I tried to emphasize the fact that they were from some violent and hazardous future

this is totally cool but just not very hunger gameish (in my opinion, of course)
i feel like you could make your own story or video game with these characters. i'd love to see that, they're really bad ass

I actually really like your interpretation; it's definitely original and interesting. I can really see distopian future in them

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KangJason In reply to SifuPeachtail [2011-10-02 01:44:19 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I mean I don't mind if people don't agree with my interpretation, I can't please everyone and I know that, but what really aggravates me is when people who don't like my art flat out tell me my interpretation is wrong. Some people don't seem to understand the concept of "interpreting".

SifuPeachtail In reply to KangJason [2011-10-02 02:28:42 +0000 UTC]

Yes I agree
Art can still be fantastic and interesting even if it's a different interpertation
I think the difference actually makes it even more eye-catching

This is...interesting. It is a great picture, but it is not really...them. Truly, it's wonderful, but It looks like Gale has a fake arm, which he doesn't in the books, and Katniss is supposed to be at elast a little bit shorter than Peeta and Gale, and in this shot, she is almost as tall as them and she's slouching, and I'm sorry, but why is Rue like an elf? She's 12 not 5, my 12 year old niece has surpassed me in height. And I'm pretty sure that Katniss wouldn't smoke, now I'm not positive, but it's just not something that she would do. And I'm sorry, right now Katniss looks like more of a hooker than a hunter the way her clothes are practically falling off of her and. Plus, I really have no idea what the heck the smoke behind Gale is supposed to be, I don't like he just throws random gas bombs, that's just not Gale. And I really don't think that he'd just have a spare gas mask around his neck for decoration. Now for Peeta, he is pretty good, I just don't think Collins meant he had super long hair. I actually highly doubt he had long hair, and a bakers son would carry more along the lines of a tray, not a spiked club. If you're going for the pre-Games look. And what's with the knee pads and shin guards? It's just slightly strange for me. Neither Katniss nor Gale is carrying a bow and arrows, which is their signiature weapon, not counting snares. But besides that...Rue just looks like a boy. That is really it. But truly, it is...imaginative...and a wonderful drawing. Well done, just not very well matching the characters. They are a little bit too badass in this.

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion so it's ok if you feel the way you do about my art, but I'll just say this:
Who are you to say what the characters should or shouldn't look like?
This is MY interpretation, not YOURS. If you imagine the characters a certain way, then so be it, but we obviously don't share minds and we are two different people, no? So why should the characters fit into what you imagine them to be, but if I imagine them a different way, I'm terribly wrong for doing so? Keep in mind that these characters are fictional, they're not real...

You should try to keep an open mind, especially since art is all about imagination, but if my interpretation of the characters offends you ssooooo much that you have to unleash an angry rant at it, then you are a truly narrow minded person.

4everAmber In reply to KangJason [2011-10-02 14:00:22 +0000 UTC]

Goodness, there is no need to get so defensive, as you said, I am entitled to my own opinion. And it does not offend me, however you got that I have no idea, I am just informing you. And yes we are totally different people, obviously, but you need to keep to some degree of realism with the characters and follow some of what the author says, now I am not saying that they should all be totally perfect, but some of what you have is just totally strange. But as I said, it is an amazing drawing. It just doesn't make sense in my mind, and I am allowed to think that, I was just pointing things out. Now I am not going to get into some big immature match about who is right and who's not. You are a wonderful artsit, I am not saying you're not, because if I did, than I would be an idiot, I just don't think that is how the author was trying to potray the characters. Now I am done with this, enjoy you art, truly, I know I'll enjoy mine. You should learn how to take critism in stride because you are bound to get more from others on everything you do in art, just deal with it.

KangJason In reply to 4everAmber [2011-10-02 14:28:23 +0000 UTC]

I know how to take criticism, I take criticism everyday because I attend a design school after all.

However, there's a difference between constructive criticism and just bluntly dishing out hate.

The only problems you had with my designs was in terms of interpretation, which is something you have no right to say if wrong since it's my own. Those kind of thoughts are things you should keep to yourself instead of trying to force onto others. I don't need to follow your interpretation of the characters.

This is how I imagine the characters and that's that, I could care less if the author didn't imagine them like this and frankly, I doubt she would care either. If you're going to give a critique, learn how to make it constructive and well-meaning, not just point things out as wrong just because you yourself don't happen to agree with them.

No problem. I get ridiculous criticism once in a while for some of the book fan art I do as well. And they're little stupid things like "her hair is suppose to be darker, blah blah blah." But don't sweat it. Defend your work because you have every right to have your own interpretation.
