It's odd how rare it seems to be to see a female nude that isn't sexualized, let alone a "conventionally attractive" slender female body posed to accentuate muscles, tendons, and angles, rather than flesh and curves. The composition has an undeniable grace and elegance to it, but the underlying tension and rawness are at odds with traditional associations of femininity with softness and languor. The taut precision of the pointed toe calls to mind the immense strength and athleticism that ballet dancers are taught to concealΒ when portraying swans or snowflakes. The outstretched arms suggest wings - a sort of Fall of Icarus, perhaps - but the fetal curl of the model's pose also suggests a seed tentatively reaching out sprout and roots. The overarching feeling, as the title indicates, isΒ an expectantΒ stillness - aΒ form that is motionless, but notΒ at rest!
