Description *Note: This was my very first Deviant Art submission (September 2003) - the drawing itself dating back to over 1 1/2 years before I even joined DA (February 2002). Looking back, I fully well realize it's not perfect, and can spot dozens of flaws in it...*

...

This drawing I drew as the front page of a history assignment for school. The history behind it is a very complicated and tragic one.

After a long and tense period lasting from September 1st 1939 to the morning of May 10th 1940, all hopes on peace for (untill then) neutral Belgium were shattered when the German army invaded its territory.

In a desperate move to stop them, the Allied forces decided to bomb the bridges of Vroenhoven, Veltwezelt and Briegden (also referred to as the 'Maastricht Bridges') which had fallen intact into the hands of the Germans.

The first raids were executed on the morning of the eleventh of May by the Belgian Military Aviation, which dispensed three Fairey Battle light bombers to each bridge, each of them equipped with totally inadequate 50 kg bombs, and escorted by 6 Gloster Gladiator fighter biplanes.

In short, the raid was doomed to fail from the start.

Arriving at their assigned bridge, Battles T-70 and T-61 were riddled by anti-aircraft fire. Β T-70 was hit on its first run in, killing its pilot, Kpt AndrΓ© Glorie. It's gunner, OLt Jean VandenBosch, managed to bail out but was severely injured. Some of its bombs did hit the bridge, but failed to destroy it.

Having flown alongside T-70 on its first run but having experienced a failure of its bomb release system, T-61 was to attempt a second run on the bridge. During this the plane was hit and exploded in mid air, killing both its pilot, Adj Franz Delvigne, and its gunner, Sgt Alexandre Moens.

T-64 succeeded in executing its run, but its bombs narrowly missed the bridge. After that, it managed to regain its home base.

The other two flights failed to destroy their targets too, and at the end of the raid, six of the nine Battles involved had been shot down, with a loss of five of the eighteen crewmembers. Their fighter escort was intercepted and lost four out of six planes, and two of its pilots (one of them remains missing to this very day) , without ever having contacted the bombers.

The subsequent allied raids did manage to destroy one of the three bridges, but at a very high cost.

This is a pretty dramatic piece.Β I can see at least some of the flaws, and can see how to fix one of them easily; upgrade the flak gun nearer the bridge to be a flakvierling to get its volume of fire nearer the volume the Battle in the foreground is taking.

Also, comments on language -
"6 Gloster Gladiators fighter biplanes" isn't right. Either "Gloster Gladiator" singular because you're using the name as an adjective describing the type of fighter biplanes used as escorts, or just Gloster Gladiators as a plural compound noun.
Also we'd never say "the $serial" indicating a specific aircraft. I can't explain this one I'm afraid beyond that you've designated a specific aircraft by stating the serial so you don't need to re-specify that by prefixing the serial with "the".

NB, this helps me remember my formal grammar.

Corrected some of the most obvious short-comings. Β I think it's the first time I've revisited that particular drawing in a decade or so.

I deliberately didn't draw a Flakvierling, as I felt it would have been out of place for this particular incident. Β While the volume of fire is indeed much higher for a Vierling, they had only just entered service a month or so before. Β The few photographs I found only appeared to show single 20-mm guns, so I drew them instead of Vierlings. Β I do agree on the rate of fire, though - but then again, I just wasn't a good artist back then. T_T

I think the '6 Gloster Gladiators fighter biplanes' was originally written as '6 Gloster Gladiators', with the 'fighter biplanes' added at a later point to avoid confusion for those who have no idea what a 'Gloster Gladiator' is (which probably is 99.9% of the deviantArt membership). Β When I made the later change, I just forgot to omit the 's' on Gladiators...

Belgium pilots had no chance against the Germans but still they fought as if they could win. Beautiful work!
Would be awesome in colour.

... I'm not really good at colouring my drawings (actually, I'm quite useless at colouring my drawings, and my scanner seems to be even more useless at scanning my coloured drawings' colours, so together we make quite a useless pair... <.<;; ), so I'm afraid it might be some while before I get to colour anything of mine, let alone this one.

Either way, this drawing is rather old - I made it almost 7 years ago now. And I'm rather displeased by it; it has a massive heap of faults and flaws. It might be that I will redraw it (or rework it) in the near future, though...
