Description This is a part of my final project for the Introduction to Photography class. Shot this over spring break about a month ago with cooperation of my friend ~casus-solari I asked him to draw an abstract self-portrait of himself on the lawn bag- he drew the image within a minute.

The second photograph of the series can be found here: [link]

The last photograph of the series can be found here: [link]

The first photo is a portrait of John wearing his own self-portrait.

The second photo is a portrait of John ripping apart his own self-portrait.

The last photo is a portrait of John staring down at his torn, tattered self-potrait.

Taken with a Canon Elan 7NE camera, using 28-105mm f4-5.6 Lens with Kodak Tri-X 400 film.

i like this a lot because it's something unexpected and kind of absurd in the middle of a backyard that looks like every suburban backyard i know. which is a good thing. becuase that gives you the slight tension between the real and ordinary, and the imaginary and unusual. the chair's a good addition because it implles movement (either he's stood up, or he will sit down), and also breaks up the dark of the lawn. your friend's body also lines up with the trees to draw the viewer back into the distance. i'd be interested to see him facing the camera, maybe, if only to somehow address the viewer more, and look more like a character and less like an object...but then of course, that depends on your intentions. good job!

Thanks for the comment- that's quite a detailed comment you gave me, but you know what, I only had the idea of my friend posing with a lawn bag over himself, with his self-portrait on it. Anything else was done on the fly, though I do feel great about how the backyard played into the image In the original film there was a tripod near him but I cropped it out as it was distracting.

Next one is much better than this one- I've shot this as a series of photos, as he eventually breaks away from his own portrait. Check that out in the future, maybe you could add me on your watch list

Thanks for the fav and the comment- this concept is gonna carry on for a bit, so keep an eye on it. It would be interesting if I get any better at it, heh.

Most definitely we should go shoot some stuff- drive by shooting all the way.

hey that's pretty cool. i never noticed this one, before i came to your page to thank you for your comment
i could probably make up a bunch of deep messages it could be conveing, but i hate bullshitting haha, so i'll just say "nice idea" :-D cuz it is!
black and white - ness gives it a sort of a darker atmosphere... like either he's artistically depressed, or about to go kill someone... or something

I'm producing +8 photos with the same theme, so it better be cool... Thanks for checking it out and leaving a comment, it's rather hard to find an audience these days.

There's definitely something brewing in the photo, and seems like he's brooding- John, why did you do a self-portrait of yours with a frown? Oh right, I was egging him to do it. Anyway, check out other pictures from the series as I will update them soon. Thanks again.

What. Isn't this a normal thing to do?
Hah, anyway, I love the film-ness (especially black and white) of this one... just the rough greys are beautiful enough.
The background turned out a lot better than i thought it wood. It gives a contemporary setting to this facade of myself.

The model is not supposed to talk! Just keep your mouth and your mysterious aura shut!

I usually use the 3 1/2 filter and use f11 exposure for over 30 seconds to achieve that. I'm a sucker for the rough greys too. I guess I'm looking for the more roughness rather than the gradual shift between black and white. I mean, don't you just hate those digital black and whites where it just seems so... perfect?

The background was a nice suprise too. It effectively made a fool out of yourself. (That's for talking façade here! I told you there would be consequences for posing for me!)

Ah whatever... I don't take myself too seriously -- in a good way!
