Karijn — Chibi Tutorial: The Squiggly Bean

Description Since everyone liked so much the last stupid tutorial I did, I made a more 'serious' one. With minimum hair involvement.

And while the Squiggly Bean does help in chibi drawings in breaking the monotony of a still character, the real (and only) solution is imagination.

And when you think that you have gotten everything out of something... Well, take a break, get a cup of tea and think again.

Thanks to you my english lesson wasn't so boring today!
(I know it isn't a good idea to draw in class, but from time to time...)

So, I don't know if you care, but still, here you go!

The link to the drawing I made. I wanted to make something you like but, I haven't read any bleach manga in so long that it would have been hard without a model.

Anyway, thanks again, feel like drawing now!

Naughty student! °A°
Haha, they look very cute, even if Kanda looks grumpy. (I ship a totally different pairing in D.Gray-man... SheryllLink anyone? *_*)

PerleAngelique In reply to Karijn [2012-03-29 17:44:28 +0000 UTC]

Wow, I never though of pairing Sheryl. But now that you say it, they have a sort of complementary personality. And what about Allen with his bad master Cross..?

Cute, but I really prefer Allen with the Earl. Adam/Neah has always been a guilty pleasure of mine...

Aah, I have some problem picturing it, maybe with a little drawing... -^^-

Well, all these things make me want to read them again! But my lovely manga are 700 km away from me...

I would like to ask you one thing that has been bothering me since I join deviantart, what is a "meme"?

Gracie mile

Karijn In reply to PerleAngelique [2012-03-29 21:07:04 +0000 UTC]

700km?!? (I'd probably die.)
I have no real definition of meme actually... It's something that everybody knows and does. On dA, a meme is usually a series of questions to which you reply with drawings. This: [link] was the first meme that became famous on dA. (2007, I feel so old.)

Thanks a lot! And good luck for you livestreaming (or whatever the right word is).
Hope to talk with you about D.Gray-Man again! Other manga are fine too.

Ps: Don't say that 24 is old, I'am only two years younger ^^'

I know this isn't the initial intent of this tutorial, but I think this is also a very helpful tutorial for drawing "bigger/larger" people. I never realized that one shape can give you at least three different viewpoints and so many different positions.

I also know this is part of the tutorial, but I love how lively the little bodies are. Great job on this, and thank you for this tip.

Karijn In reply to WildcatzAL [2012-03-26 17:19:28 +0000 UTC]

I really happy you liked it and found it useful.
In fact, I didn't think about that when I drew the chibis, but when yu look at it, everything can be broken down to basic shapes.

Though it has a better result, using circles and lines to do the guidelines for the drawing is always hard for me because I mess up with the proportions. Using the bare minimum of shapes, I have better control of the whole picture.

And don't forget the 'layer flip' option. Doubles the position and doubles the fun.

WildcatzAL In reply to Karijn [2012-03-26 17:28:51 +0000 UTC]

Well I'm glad you made it helpful ; )
This is true.

Haha I honestly do the same anymore at this point. I only really use shapes to check my anatomy to see if it's off.

Exactly : )

I like your example of tea, but the problem with me is I'd get a cuppatea and then never come back to the drawing! lol I <3 tea, and I 👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Karijn In reply to tenkerasu [2012-03-26 15:09:05 +0000 UTC]

Then try coffee.
I usually go for tea because coffee keeps me awake and slightly trembling for about 2 to 3 days. Then I die. °A°

(You could always draw chibis while the water is heating. Kettles do look a bit like chibis if you look at them right.)

tenkerasu In reply to Karijn [2012-03-26 15:23:09 +0000 UTC]

>.> I don't own a kettle, I own a tiny water heater, which takes like four minutes to bring water to a boil. And I know how you feel about coffee - same thing happens to me. But I loves my tea, which is why it makes it hard to draw, and because my birthday is today my friend got me some of my favorite tea, and now I feel like I have to drink it for my birthday! ;___; Luckily I am better at drawing full scale people; I just haven't uploaded ANY in a while as my scanner's stupid...

Karijn In reply to tenkerasu [2012-03-26 15:38:38 +0000 UTC]

I bought my tablet only because my scanner killed colours.
...and now that you told me about tea I remember that I need to buy some for my mother next time I go to uni. °3°

You can use zucchini for thin chibis and eggplants for medium sized ones. I like my chibis fat so... Beans.

Beans are better... You never know what strange kind of bumps potatoes may have. Wouldn't want your chibi to and up pregnant the first time.
