You're doing a great job hun!!...and one thing I urge you to NOT do, is throw anything away that you don't perhaps like...save it, it helps you see your progress okay
(I just happen to read a comment you said further down about you trashing if it didn't work out)
Β Anyway like I said you're doing just fine and this is what drawing is all about, practise! Β These are basic shapes that I practised and practised etc. etc. as many times as it took for me to understand about cast shadows, etc. The shapes too are shapes you see in all kinds of different art works from landscapes to still life, so practising is important if you want to advance
...like your beautiful apple you did!!
Β Don't be so tough on yourself either, if you come to a block, just put it aside and do some reading up on what you're stuck on, there is a wealth of videos on youtube etc., to help!!
Here is a website I want you to have a peek atΒ

Hi Β dear Valery, I really appreciate an artist like you are commenting and giving me advice, I am honored...gosh...!!Thank uou very much for taking of you time to write this!
I haven't trashed it yet but I have started over with another one of the same reference. It was a great mistake to do the background and it becomed really messy for me. I will not do the background until the figures are finished... or almost finished. I used wrong pencils to the background and to big strokes..I must work with smaller moves and really slow..lol...I want to draw realism so I will try to be patient..I did the shapes and shadowing pretty okay..so it was not fun when I did the background and found out what a mess it becomed.Β
I will absolutely check that link, it looks awesome...i am looking at youtube all the time..lol..and also here on dA...Thank you again, amazing to have feedback from an artist as you..wow

Aww, and it's Beverly...although Valery is a nice name too
Aw hun, you are most welcome...I see huge potential and that's why I commented the way I did Β So glad to hear you didn't trash it
and yes sometimes when we're learning, we have to start over again, but that's okay it seems you've worked it out, what went wrong. Β
To be honest, it's all in how much pressure you use to draw...light pressure=light marks, heavy pressure=heavy marks! Β Small circular or oval strokes is key in blending, you won't get variances in going from one value to another, you will get smooth transitions! The heavier the shadow, the heavier your strokes will be etc. Β I use a very good quality mechanical pencil like those architects/draughtsman use, most graphite artists do because they can create both the lighter values and darker values/tones, also they are self sharpening! Β A "kneaded erasure" is your best friend...it can be moulded to a fine point or line (any shape
) to take out the "highlights". Β I always use smooth paper as well, Strathmore has good paper, or you can just use printer paper for practising
. Β
Observation is key when your drawing or painting, and in everyday life. Β If you look at the fine details of anything, you are observing..."seeing" what is there, NOT what you think is there...this is THE most important thing to keep telling yourself when you draw!! Can't stress that enough!! Β View the negative and positive shapes (what shapes are between objects as well as around them), the tones and values of the shadows and lights etc. Β
Well that's enough lesson today LOL Β Yes do keep viewing those videos, they are a wealth of information, but ultimately you'll have your own style of course. Β Keep up the great work Karin, and thank you so much for your lovely sentiments, I appreciate that!!
