Oh God that's a good good question. I kinda thought that since robots seem to exist on TV in RJ's verse, he'd be into a plush version of a killer robot on TV like "The Metal Monster", only he'd idolize him when he's younger due to the way Grampz instills that pride in him. xP

I really like him in clothes for some reason.

I agree, it's not something you usually see on RJ considering since he's well... a robot. Lol

Oddly enough, what inspired me to draw RJ in T-shirts was seeing him in clothes in some of his concept art: orig00.deviantart.net/2aeb/f/2… orig00.deviantart.net/9684/f/2…

These were taken off Mike Stern's blog before he shut it down.

Right? I wish he hadn't've taken it down. Had I known I would've copied more. There are a few more concept sketches he had on there that I haven't found yet. Anyway, yeah, RJ was initially drawn with clothes, and while I like his design the way it is in the show, I like the idea of him wearing clothes sometimes.

I love the idea of a baby RJ, but I don’t like the idea of it being canon ;-;

I getcha, and this isn't canon to my fanfic either. Wouldn't make a ton of sense given his parents said he's supposed to be optimal at his original size. Mentally, however, I could see Robot maturing as he's learning all these little life lessons, granted he probably didn't start life with an actual infant's mentality.

internetfreak14 In reply to kartoonfanatic [2018-05-10 18:53:37 +0000 UTC]

Oh, for sure he’d have some kind of infant mentality at first. Granted not literally, but extremely childlike, but I also imagine he’d be too calculative since he’d depend on his programming more than anything at first. *shrug*

kartoonfanatic In reply to internetfreak14 [2018-05-10 19:01:40 +0000 UTC]

True. Depending on what episode/commercial is referring to the show, Robot is either an unchanging machine who is just observing humans or he is a person who is learning and maturing alongside humans. The show makes it unclear which one it is (and honestly other cartoons do the same thing, Zim does this with little things like if Zim is supposed to enslave humans or wipe them out completely). I prefer the latter. Knowing Robot is at least changing a little bit each episode, that he's absorbing human culture more and more despite how proud he is of being a robot, makes the show more engaging and it makes sense if you look at the show like a cartoony, less mellow dramatic version of one of those teen-dramas like Degrassi which were so popular in the '80s.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

internetfreak14 In reply to kartoonfanatic [2018-05-10 19:06:15 +0000 UTC]

Hold on. Degrassi was an 80s show?
Oh, I definitely feel like Robot is the latter. He has too much personality. A soulless machine wouldn’t have a personality. And there’s obvious changes. He gets frustrated, he has parents for God’s sake, a crush, it’s all there.
Although I am curious to just see an AU what if fanfic kinda thing where RJ really IS just a soulless machine programmed to act the way he does...oooo...

Maybe Im wrong but I think it started in the late '80s. I never watched it though. I flipped the channel when it came on Nick and Nite.

OK, here's an example I'm more familiar with: The Sweet Valley High books. The books were like individual episodes with a lot of characters that grew and changed and dated different people as the series went on. It had pretty cliche but intense stuff like one character who takes cocaine for the first time and dies, and another who gets into a coma after getting into a motorcycle accident. The main character's parents get divorced later on in the series, and so on. Something about it feels very much a product of its time. Anyway, I kinda get the sense for where they were pulling the sort of teenage atmosphere, but with a fantasy wrench in it.

That would be interesting, but also it kinda sounds like something that would already exist. I even think there was an old sitcom or something where it was just a little girl playing an android and it was supposed to be very awkward, think Nostalgia Critic reviewed it ages ago. But with RJ having the ability to mature and change, it puts an added conflict on his loyalty to robots. On top of teenage drama he would have to deal with guilt for leaving Grampz unit alone more often, and even neglecting his parents in favor of his friends. Plus, he might be obligated to marry a robot instead of a human, if he chooses to marry at all.

Not gonna lie, Sweet Valley High sounds cliche. That or I just prefer weird twists and shit waaaay over regular stuff.

Not necessarily. At least, not the way I’m thinking it? I dunno. I know what show you’re talking about. It’s one from the 80s and it sucked. It was called Small Wonder or something. The girl didn’t act humanlike at all (which I understand is the joke but still) it was just awkward and bad.
What I’m trying to say is that he’s still an advanced AI, but not a sentient one. In the AU anyway. So something could happen where everyone who was close to him just realizes that he isn’t real at all and was just an AI built to trick them and absorb information. I dunno I’m bored and on a tangent. Just trying to come up with different things.

It was cliche in some ways, but also surprisingly heavy for a book series from the 80s. Dealing with body issues and kids dying from drug overdoses and one time, one of the characters got kidnapped. I guess what I liked about it was that it could dive into all these heavy things but maintain an optimistic attitude, plus I was impressed that the series could carry multiple story arcs at once throughout several of the books.

Ah, Small Wonder yeah, that was the name. What a strange, strange idea for a show. (Then again, it probably thrived on everybody gushing about how cute the kids were. Full House is literally nothing but "omg we have cute kids and a hunky uncle.") Kinda pisses me off that the latter was popular at all, since there were much funnier sitcoms like Family Matters running at the same time.

(Trying to remember what we're talking about) Now that idea is heavy. 3: The idea of finding out someone you care about is a robot, and the emotional toil there. I mean, they'd still be who you thought they were all along but you can't help but see them differently. That has story potential on its own.

I do like me some optimism. I try to be an optimistic person nowadays... I used to be so goddamn pessimistic.

I know! And Small Wonder lasted a good while.. ugh.

You could always look at the past replies xP The idea makes no sense anyway, but I was trying to think of a weird super hypothetical AU where the closer the kids get to Robot, the more they realize that he isn't sentient, is just a regular AI designed to "interact" with humans and stuff. Like the closer they get to him, the more flaws in his speaking and loops, glitches, etc. he goes through, the weirder he acts (because he's just an AI and overly complicated conversations leave him "confused" on what to say, like a real chatbot). I'm just thinking more about the kids' emotions and reactions as they'd realize that truth? Idk maybe there's something in the air I'm breathing.

kartoonfanatic In reply to internetfreak14 [2018-08-04 13:38:49 +0000 UTC]

Same. I think you're very optimistic, but honest, and that's great to be. Too many people exaggerate everything, in the way they deal with situations and just react to things.

Which begs the question: Who was watching this and saying "That was alright, I think I'll tune in again next week"? How bored were people in the 1980s? Even kids? I mean, there had to be better TV than that...
I'm really glad there's a higher expectation of what gets put on the networks nowadays. Although I miss in some cases, particularly with cartoons, they don't go with the "throw it at the wall and see what sticks" mentality, (which oddly enough would require more time and money, so it's the medium that needs preemptive thought involved the most) with live action, there really needed to be someone critical looking at this stuff. Especially around 2010 or so, when networks finally faced the fact that reality TV was not going to be the cheap alternative to good fictional writing forever. People have so many good stories to tell, so many funny people to tell jokes, it makes me ache to think of how many writers just for live action couldn't pitch their ideas for TV shows, comedic or dramatic, during the 2000s because the networks weren't risking putting money into anything.

Ah God, my heart hurt reading that. ='( Although technically speaking, RJ, depending on how you interpret his character, is just that--a very sophisticated AI that can play the part of being sentient without actually being sentient. All those issues you said he would have sound right...
If you have ideas for writing this out, I wouldn't mind reading them, but shit, that sounds sad.
I appreciate how you can embrace the most realistic scenarios with these characters.

Aww...thank you, Dom.Β Β

I know, right? -_-

I'm glad reality TV has taken a turn for the worst. We still have some here and there, but it's nowhere near as rampant as it used to be. I think cartoons are making a comeback. (And I had a thought, but since I saw so many RJ episodes taken down from YT (probably due to CN copyright strikes or something, idk) I wonder if CN is gonna reboot RJ since they have the rights to it, and not GM, and they'll end up completely fucking the show up..)

Eh, it's hypothetical, and it's of course not related to my "canon" fic...eeek.
Robot actually not being sentient though? ohh, fuck that. I think he's totally sentient, given what we've seen in the show (there's no doubt in my mind he's sentient, and honestly anyone who argues his sentience is crazy lol). But the idea of him actually just being an AI designed to act sentient is still sad in itself (and is still hypothetical, thank godΒ Β ). That idea can't be any sadder than your "Erased" fic, though.
