Hello! I know this is an old comment and you've probably already figured it out, but I'd like to offer my help. ^^

The "Opacity Lock" is a super nifty tool that helps you make sure you don't "color outside of the lines" so to speak. When you use it, you wont be able to color outside of the shape you've colored in, but you can't erase it either until you unlock it.

For example, if I were to put a circle on the page, fill it in, and then put opacity lock on it and colored it with a different color, it will still remain a circle instead of scribbles showing up outside of it.

Oof, that was a horrible explanation but I hope it helped some.

Yeah, I have figured it out actually. i still dont use it, though.

I make a separate layer above the line or whatever I want colored, and set it to "clipping group." Then I color in that layer and lower the opacity. Thats what I do for shading because there's no blending when Im using the paintbrush tool and I have more control over the intensity of the shade or color.

Still, thanks for the explanation.

Ah, yup I do that as well. I only use the lock layer when I do cell shading. ^^

Click on the 'New Layer' button instead of the 'New Linework Layer'

Hope it helps

I just started learning how to cell shade and this was mighty friendly. I made this work following your instructions, plus a little bit of improvisation [link] . P.S. if you have any pointers, that would be most appreciated =3=.

Holy fuck I get it.
...Kind of. The layers are kind of laughing at me though. In the face. While slapping me. I goddamn hate layers. I have no system in them whatsoever exept for base and rest of the drawing.

What size pen did you use for the actual cell-shading? Was it still 0.5, same as when you made the line art?

lady-yuna7 [2012-08-15 12:31:36 +0000 UTC]

So the Opacity is kinda like Clipping Layers but only on one layer?

I see what you did there!
That's really useful, since I just got my tablet a few hours ago...

Though on my SAI, Opacity lock is called "preserve opacity", but it does the same thing.
Thank you for the idea... ; u ;
