Ah yeah, that gave a lot of people trouble in our class too. I was lucky and managed to get tons of my own photos to reference from, but for others I was forced to reference from pics online (like this one). I'm sure if you alter the picture enough from what you are referencing, you should be able to get away with it though. It's just best to take and reference from your own photos since it's 100% your work. If you absolutely can't use your photos, getting permission from others or using stock photos may be permissible. Ask first though, since I'm not sure if rules have changed or not.
What are you planning to do for your concentration? o:

I see; yeah, the 20% rule is a bit vague, but I find that my teacher thinks if she can tell something I do is from a photo then I haven't altered it enough D:
I'm planning to do my concentration human's hidden impact on the environment.. I want to illustrate the phrase "How beautiful this would have been." But I'm not too sure what exactly I want to draw yet. Still completing my breadth section

Well that's dumb D: Being able to make something look like a photo should be seen as skill, and you can use several different sources for one picture and make it altered enough from each of them, which still looking like a photo as well if done right. o-o
Ah, that should be cool o: I went with something boring (baby animals lol) because I could get a bunch of pics for that easily.

Oh, by "look like the photo" I mean the likeness of the reference photo, not how photo-realistic it is. I'm not that good, haha. I think I'll start taking more liberty with these references, especially since my concentration requires a fair bit of that.
I have no patience with drawing from reference; I'm doing one from my own photo for breadth and it's taking forever (not to mention progress is painfully slow D

Ah, well that makes sense then xD When you're doing art for something like that, photos probably shouldn't be copied directly. (I kinda made an oopsie of copying too close to the original with a few though since I was still learning how to draw from photos while making them my own, but at least I didn't get in trouble or anything lol)
I know how that is cx I both like and somewhat dislike working from references. I like that you don't have to work hard figuring out how the body will go if it's in a different pose, or fur direction, and it's also really educational as well. But I dislike how it makes me want to draw every detail and then when you compare the work to the photo, the mistakes painfully stand out.

I guess my solution will be to include different parts of different photos for the same image: a pose here, cloud shape there, color combos elsewhere
Honestly though, as long as the judges don't recall seeing an exact photo like your drawing, they won't bother finding out (well, maybe they know the first few rows from Google image search xD)
Exactly. With my own stuff I have more freedom but once I'm drawing from photo I want things to be exactly the same..

That's the way to do it xD OR just draw a piece of the photo by 'cropping' it o:
Yeah, I don't think they're as tough on people as it would seem unless it was obvious theft or a complete rip-off. They're more worried about scoring I believe. That's where you gotta be careful, they don't like handing out high scores
Yep, I'm the same way with that. I've tried to break myself from that thinking lately, but the mindset isn't so easily ignored when you get into a pic haha.

Yep yep
Darn it. Well I'm not going into art and I have zero actual training so I'll be happy just to finish my portfolio
For sure. Even with my own ideas I end up modifying it a lot and disliking it because I've been staring at it for too long.. xD

Ah, well good luck regardless! c:
Yep xD I don't know how many times that's happened to me. I could love the piece while working on it, and then once I submit it and start looking at it more, then I see all the flaws that stand out and it irritates me so much I begin to hate the piece. :'D

Thanks!
See, I start to hate the piece before I even transfer my sketch to the paper D:
I really need to tell myself to stop the judgements and just do it

No problem c:
Have you tried laying out a composition then? I know some things I've done in the past that I hated was probably for the most part, because I didn't try to give it any sort of composition. And once you lay one out, it makes things easier to work on too. Lately I've been using the rule of thirds, but other types of compositions, like using triangles work really well too. C:

That's a really helpful suggestion! It also saves the trouble of fiddling with elements too much, I guess?

What is your favourite type of composition?

Kasaurus In reply to annsquare [2012-11-05 02:02:07 +0000 UTC]
Right now it's rule of thirds, but I love things that move in a circular motion around the picture or an infinity symbol as well, they always turn out cool xD

Ooh, infinity symbol, that sounds fun! I'm always amazed by the spiral one the most though
