Description
Speedpaint of a turtle I did with mostly the marker brush to experiment around some more. Referenced from a photo that was taken at our trip to the fair. The reference photo I'm pretty sure was a mata mata turtle now, though since I painted the shell smoother for this painting, it might could pass as a softshell? :'DAhh, I've been craving some good ol' realism lately. xD This was a good picture to relax on. <3

The real turtle was a mata mata I believe, but the painting looks more like a softshell in my opinion, so we'll just call this one a softshell. C:

Amazing work - love how this is instantly recogniseable despite only consisting of a few strokes, and this may sound strange, but my favoureite thing about this isn't the turtle itself, but the murky water - it looks so smooth, and the lighting is brilliant!

Thanks! Murky water is pretty fun haha. I always think back to the times when we used to go out to the creek and the water was yellow or orange, so it's a pretty neat source of inspiration there, and I always find myself using lots of yellows/oranges and such in freshwater drawings :3

Looking to the photo, I'm almost sure it is a mata-mata turtle (wikipedia link: [link] [link] ) I would like to see a photo from upside, but I think it is that species, and in you photo you can see that definitly is not a softshell turtle...

I think so too, it does look a lot more like that kind of turtle from what I remember. I know the actual shell was much too bumpy to be a softshell, but perhaps the painting could pass as one since I didn't accentuate the bumps that much, so it looks smoother?

Yes, the drawing can pass as a softshell of course, because you changed not only the shell but also the skin... you made a lifting to the turtle xDD

INDEED <3 *just watched all 3 Jurassic Park's recently*
We should ouo I've barely gotten to do collabs with anyone so far, and one person that asked for a collab hasn't contacted me in forever even after I did my lineart for them, and the other is pretty busy with other stuff right now, so I'm not going to rush them. xD

Yeah, you're right, it's a softshell turtle and as you said, the shell looks a bit too plain

Here's the photo of the turtle: [link]
I know it must be a type of softshell, but the shell on the actual turtle looks a bit harder and more bumpy. I simplified the painting of it quite a bit and didn't make the shell as bumpy, so it's probably hard to tell an exact species from the drawing, but maybe the photo will help?

It's a bit hard to tell, even the web doesn't seem to be helpful here.
Was the picture in your stash taken by you?

Indeed, I've tried searching quite a bit to find the species as well x.x
Either me or my dad, we were running around so much at the fair I forgot who took which pictures. xD

Indeed o: There was a label by the tank, but it was too crowded for us to get up close to read the darn thing x.x We tried taking a picture of it to read it, but it was too blurry to read as well. :c

I guess that the room was pitch black and the only lights were from the water tank right? :/

No, it was a bright room, the tank just looks dark from the backdrop. It was just so crowded that it was hard to get close to anything for very long.
