Description Uff-da! I am sooo done with this painting! Not touching it again... ever.

Anyways, a werewolf (not in the full moon/transformation/vicious monster way).

Personally, I find werewolves (and other anthros) a little silly. I mean really, it's a hybrid between a canine and a primate? Srsly. So ridiculous

Absolutely breathtaking piece - I adore the realistic fur texture, and the face is utterly stunning I quite like the anatomy here - not all weres need to be ridiculously muscular And I don't think his head looks too big - it's coming forward towards the viewer
One thing I would say though is that brain size isn't always the only factor involved in intelligence - in dogs, for example, some of the most intelligent breeds are small dogs (pugs, toy poodles etc) despite having much smaller skulls than their larger counterparts

Thank you very much!

I respect your (and everyone else's) opinion on werewolf brains. Though the size issue has been cleared up for me. The shape of a canine's skull would not fit a brain with the intelligence of a human (or other primate) the whole structure of their skull would have to be changed (and dog/wolf lovers would not like that very much). What I am saying is... they are strange because they would be giant apes with wolf heads who act like any other canine (they would not use tools and weapons).

You're very welcome indeed

And that's ok - besides, I'm not really a werewolf fan I like to draw them occasionally, but as a creature they're not really my thing I don't tend to think of them as being of human intelligence, but more dog-like in both mannerisms and in appearance than most weres -i.e. equally comfortable on four legs as two, more like dogs capable of walking upright due to a different pelvic design, but also capable of walking/running on all fours as the arms and legs are of equal length I do tend to find the idea of werewolves wearing clothes etc. a little bit strange too - surely the whole point of being able to turn into a beast is not to need weapons or clothes?

Yeah, they have claws and fangs, why would they need to struggle with rocks and sticks to make tools. And they have fur, why would they need clothes? Silly, silly werewolves.

I like the fact he's not all muscle and brawn. I know the head / body size has been brought up a ton, but I prefer the thinner body style, at least for this were. The detail in the face and fur is incredible, and I love the use of light and texture, it makes me feel I'm in the picture ^^

Yeah, I am a sucker for thinner anthros I'm not a big fan of huge muscles.

I think you guys are missing the point somewhat...larger brain size doesn't actually denote intelligence.
Picture a brain. There are lots of little 'hills' and 'valleys' all over it right? Well each of these contains a lot, and I mean a lot, of neurons. The more neurons packed into one little space (and thus the more crevasses present in the brain), the more intelligent the subject.
Our brains are smaller than that a humpback whale, but because we have more crevasses and thus more neurons, we are considered to be smarter.
So, the skull size of the wolf is perfectly acceptable.
Which is all I had to say.
And it's very well done

It's so amazing! I LOVE the shading and the face!
and now for something different: Yah, I definitely agree with you about the "anthros look silly" comment They look kinda cool until you think about what kind of combination they are. And, you were right to make the head larger, because head size doesn't have anything to do with intelligence, it's how large the brain is in comparison to the body, as well as the shape of the brain

phot realistic.... f*ckin awesome! the head is bigger because the image is planed to be like that right?

Well brain size really doesn't necessarily denote intelligence. Dogs and wolves are very intelligent in their own way. Werewolves /are/ pretty silly though at least "hair"wolves are. Lovely piece though! Anatomy be damned, it is a mythical creature.

Since werewolves are magical creatures, normal rules don't apply! (How intelligent could Tinkerbell be since her head is so tiny?)
His face is beautiful, looks king of coyote-ish.

Yeah, I have a habit of making wolves look like coyotes. Though I studied photos of wolves before and during creating this piece, so I don't think it looks too terribly un-wolf-ish

I get what you're saying. Size has already been pointed out. But what about the actual skull structure of the animal? A more round, big forehead sort of skull but a more muzzle like mouth structure. More human head in appearance, at least the brain case, something different from the wolf-headed furry human werewolf arch-type.
As for the actual artwork, beautiful detail and the blurred photograph foreground thing works well. The detail on the muzzle is especially magnificent. It looks great.

I have to disagree on the brain part, particularly because most werewolves are larger than their human counterparts, but I've thought about the same thing with the wolf/primate thing. If some aliens visited here and were trying to understand this...well, its quite bizarre. Just as bizarre as the opposite: a wolf with a human head, hands, and feet, with no fur. Its funny what is aesthetically pleasing to us.

katanimate In reply to sarahfinnigan [2010-09-16 18:06:34 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the whole werewolf-being-larger-than-a-human thing has been cleared up. But I still stand by my werewolves (and other anthros) being silly comment. Plus, how much bigger can a werewolf be then a human? It would have to be very large, and have dramatically different anatomy in order to move and carry it's gigantic weight (it's anatomy would have to be more like that of a gorilla or have extremely thick hind legs).
These are just my opinions on a fantasy-creature. I still like werewolves and anthros

katanimate In reply to kotenokgaff [2010-09-21 15:23:29 +0000 UTC]

I just think they would need a bigger (or differently shaped skull) to fit a brain that has the intelligence that most people think werewolves have. That's all

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kotenokgaff In reply to katanimate [2010-09-21 16:40:26 +0000 UTC]

but you know the size of brain and smartness does not depends from each other
like trex has the biggest brain but was not the clever one?

Silverst [2010-09-16 17:49:29 +0000 UTC]

There's a loophole for the intelligence part.
Since werewolves are significantly larger that humans, the space for brains their sculls have is somewhat the same or slightly bigger than of a human. That allows werewolves to keep their humanity intact and have room for all those animal instincts.

The painting itself is very impressive. I love the light effects and the way you painted the fur.
Just the whole anatomy and proportions look very strange to me.
Anyway, still great job!
