Description Creature concept for practice.

The Mishibizhiw is a mythological creature from the Native American societies around the Great Lakes region of the U.S. and Canada. It's both a creature of the water and the underworld; behaving much like an alligator or a crocodile by dragging men and women into the water to devour.

I was looking up native american mythological creatures to see if their bestiaries included draconic creatures. I thought this guy sounded a lot like a native american version of a wyrm.

Edit: Been wanting to do a rough touch up of this guy for a while. Changed his face a bit, added more contrast, reworked the lighting a tad. Now onto new things!

Absolutely amazing! I love the detail of the water dripping off it. The creature's backstory reminds me of a similar creature from Mesoamerican mythology, Ahuitzotl.

Although there are a few superficial similarities between the two paintings, I see no grounds for claiming that Kate borrowed Alex's design. Alex's dragon looks a bit like a chameleon, and Kate's looks like a cross between a catfish and a dragon. Alex's chameleon dragon is just clinging to the rock and looking around, while the Mishibizhiw has an aggressive, feline pose. Unless painting a dragon-like creature sitting on a rock in a body of water with some mist is now copyrightable, you are in the wrong. You should apologize to Kate for being so rude.

Huh, well that's interesting. But I've never seen that image before. I sympathize with wanting to defend another artist, but you shouldn't be so quick to incriminate someone in the name of another.

I really love your use of textures, it supports the work rather than subtracting from it. You've really got this down.

It never occured to me that some myths might be linked to the Great Lakes. Being in Central New York, I live right by them! My bf even goes to college right on Lake Ontario

KatePfeilschiefter In reply to Sartori-S [2012-06-13 17:54:13 +0000 UTC]

Haha, don't let them near the water then.

Yeah, most of the time when we think about mythological characters and creatures it's those of the big hitters like the Greeks and the Norse. But North America has a lot of strange and cool stories as well, just as much as anywhere else.
