Description I find pleating is real easy to show, but hard to explain. So the pictures are probably more useful than the text in this tutorial.

I am making a new brown linen dress using stacked box pleats, so I took some photos for a tut at the same time. Hopefully its ok to understand! I also hope in a few more weeks I'll have some images of the dress up!

I will also be doing a tutorial of how I sew my seams, but I need to do some sewing just for that as I'll need to use a contrasting thread and fabric or else the camera can't pick up the tiny stitches!

Thanks so much for posting this!  It has been instrumental in making the standing ruff I'm working on

5X the waist? wow... man, why did they have to run out that stuff?! D:
making a pleated skirt for my friend for her birthday, but the pattern needs 3M of matterial, and i bought the last 2M the store had...

yup, because these are stacked box pleats. For normal box pleats you need 3X the waist. If you still don't have enough you can do part pleats where the pleats don't meet at the back (ie. two little tucks back to back so it looks like a full box pleat frm the front)
What sort of skirt are you making?

right now i think the cartridge pleats actually seem to look best/are easier, from the tutorial you linked to in one of the comments (sorry for creeping on your comments and stuff )
it's (hopefully) going to be like a vintage '50s style skirt
the pattern i'm using is actually from 1952, although...there were no instructions with it

I don't mind you reading through my comments! I find other peoples comments to be useful all the time!
Cartridge pleating is easy once you know how- for some reason a lot of people feel intimidated by it at first though.
I love 1950s stuff! will you be posting it on DA when you are done?

hehe, okays =3
i've tried it on a few scraps i have, so far it's come out pretty nicely, just need to find a way to get the bottom to come out like that too though~ actually, i find it far easier then regular pleating XD
probably will, although i might wait till i give it to her. still have to get photos of the newest shirts i've finished as well~

That first paragraph is in a painful-to-read font.

But other than that, this is great! Exactly the tutorial I was looking for!

Sorry you have dificulties reading the first paragraph! I think its because of the way I made the tutorials- in paintshop where you insert words into a vector box. If I get the dimensions of the box wrong then anything can be hard to read.
But I'm glas you found it useful!

I'm glad I found this...I finally have the name for the pleats I did on some garb I've been working on...LOL

I wish I could find a good tutorial on Cartridge pleating. Alas, my skirt calls for box in the front and cartridge in the back and sides...yep this thing is pleated to death.

Thanks! I'm so glad its helped. Cartridge pleating is easy, its basically like a glorified gather. I don't have a tutorial on it, but this [link] is the best one I know of. What are you making? sounds like a very full skirt! I think box pleats at the front and cartridge pleating elsewhere will look pretty

It's a Tudor Nobility gown. I'm planning on having it basically done in the next couple weeks.

Awesome tutorial! I've been successfully doing this myself for years, but can't explain how to anyone else to save my life.

Thaks! this is one of the things where its easier to show rather than tell, I had to try and tell my sister how to do it over messenger, with no photos, which was sooooo hard!

If you don't mind, the next time anyone asks me, I'm going to point them this way.
