My way of painting manes. No smudging, no burning, no dodging! I used to do it with premade hair brushes some time ago, but as for now, I don't use any. I'm actually more satisfied of their outcome since I stopped to, so I thought that maybe I'll share what I came up with ^^ The brushes I described are easy to make 'at home', so I didn't include a brushpack [especially since one of them is 'stolen' from another artist ] If you want, just save those three as 'manebrushes' or something like that.

Another good thing when you're trying to shade your mane is playing with your own hair! Twirl them, stand at different angles to the light, observe how does it affect your hair, and try to compose your work based on that

Plus, a REALLY lazy way of general shading is merging the hair layers and playing with the curves (CRTL + M). Though personally I hardly ever use that
