They do. When I was living at home. my dad flat out discouraged me from ever being an artist (despite the fact that HE was a professional artist for a living) his exacts words were when I was younger: "You want to be an artist? but those people are SOOO talented though, no ones going to hire you"
and well, thats the kind of shit that made me move out. Since I left, I was able to graduate art school with a 4.0 average.

True for a few of my older siblings. Haha. They think I'm doing nothing when I'm actually drawing.

Ahhh *hugs* being an artist isn't something that is as easily accepted by the previous generation from what I've seen. My best friend's dad keeps saying she is gonna live in a box T_T But she is improving so quickly and studying to be an animator.. You are doing amazing and I would miss seeing your work if you stopped

Good art takes time, so does reading. It peeves me when someone finds me reading and assumes I have nothing else better to do. Like, this book might belong to the school and I want to read it and turn it back in tomorrow. It might be a grade for one of my Lit teachers where we normally have to read. When someone says they are doing something, it must be important to that person. No one else has a say in what they can do in their free time. It's non-negotiable!
.... Sorry about that rant.

Man I relate to this so bad. I'll just be drawing downstairs, and my mom will walk past to see what I'm doing. Then she'll berate me and tell me to do something more "productive". She get's even worse when I'm drawing animeΒ Β

Wow are you saying drawing is more important than helping your parents?

NexttyBlu In reply to MacyTheKing [2016-10-13 23:34:03 +0000 UTC]
No of corse not! Helping my parents is obviously more important but would just like if my parents would actually take a real look at my art, because they just glance at it.

The story of lot of dA people's life ... I guess. Hopefully people won't stop and can show what they can do, and hold on! Dads are dads... anywhere in the world, it seems.Β I can't say if this is hillarious or totally hopeless, but I like your comics... Thanks for sharing! ^^

I'm so sorry, Kawacy - I know the pain! Your art is excellent - do not let these comments get to you. I absolutely love your style and use of color!
After being told so many times to stop "wasting time and work on something productive" while drawing, I've just stopped telling people I'm an artist. I work on things in secret, only to put them away when friends or family come around. I've stopped telling people I studied art at school before switching majors. I feel ashamed. The guilt hinders me a lot. :/
This is one of the only places I share my work because I know a lot of people are in the same boat.
