No offense, but your dad sounds like a real fucking asshole, and kind of a dumbass.
I mean, if drawing = nothing, then how would he explain the succes of cartoon- and comic creators?
You know, people who made a living out of drawing.

I'm actually very glad my parents are like his, but kids at school have been assholes and have told mw things like "drawings not going to get you anywhere", or "drawing sucks and you're just wasting your life." Sucks a lot

Writers are like this, too. Sitting quietly and reading, or just staring at a blank page/screen, should mean that we're thinking furiously but haven't decided on how to get the thoughts down on the page...
... but sometimes it means that we got nothin'. Yet.

This never happened with me exactly but something with the same pressure occurred to me and I had to agree as same as above said but again I found myself so fearing all the time that I could not psychologically suppress the fear and all sufferings that started to gradually cripple my jobs. Then I was let go of the job. I learnt a lot and started from who I am, my rightful place and I found myself less caring about what people thought.

my mom is always super annoying when i do graphics. i'm not even all that good at them. and at this point a lot of mine are wash rinse repeat type things. which live eternally in my folders. untouched. unposted. and unworthy of anyone else's time. earlier this year i was making posters to hand out at a presentation, and she hovered over me and said i could probably do this for a living in a few years. but i'm probably going to get a computer science degree. as a backup. for if i can't feed myself as a shutin.

I wish parents would try to be more understanding of us being so passionate about art.

This is the problem; people are so used to actual labor being called "work", that doing fun things, like drawing, are somethings that they can't or don't want to consider "work".
