Relatable! I remember when I was 14 years old, spending my free time with drawing and writing, my mother said to me I should go outside and go to parties and drink alcohol (again, I was 14) and be 'like normal teenagers' instead of doing nothing all day. It's really ironic when you think about how many people spend their free time watching television and then say that art is 'not productive'.

P.S.: I really like your hair.

It's like that with my parents, except it's when I'm trying to write. If it isn't homework, then I'm technically doing "nothing." I feel you.

I think everyone except me in my family understands that doing art is something. They always interrupt me, and make me do other stuff, and they consider it "doing nothing all day" xD

That sucks a lot!

I am not an artist, rather I write fanfics. Though I can consider myself lucky, don't get that from my mother at all. I can imagine my dad would do something like that but me and mom left him since we didn't get along with him.

Art is doing something, in fact art is a major part of our world. It is how people express themselves. And art comes in many forms and suchlike. The main art many do on this site which consist of the many styles of drawing or creating visual pictures one can find. I could draw something but it's not my passion. There's written style, fanfics and novels. This is something I really like doing. Yes, fanfics have a bad rep in some places on the internet and elsewhere but I am sure the same applies for all forms of art, someone somewhere just has to be a hater. Other forms of art include video games, TV shows, movies, cartoons, and more I didn't list.

The good stuff takes a lot of effort and time to do. Your dad is in the wrong since if you were “doing nothing” you wouldn't have any artwork done.

Art, and its many forms, are very important to our world. Without them it would be a very boring place. Those who want to do a form of art have to practice, we all do. After all, practice and observation helps us to improve. And for those exploring new styles, helps them to know what works and what doesn't.

I get a lot of crap from my mom about my writing.  Apparently to a lot of people, writing or drawing = doing nothing.  Whenever my little sister gets a bad grade (and I mean a B....) or my mom is just cranky, she'll take away what she calls 'privileges'.  In fact, she'd rather us half the time sit on the couch and watch tv because she gets sick of watching me and my sister waste our time

Jedi-Qui-Gon In reply to IzzyMarrie [2016-04-05 21:29:21 +0000 UTC]

That sucks!

It seems like it for some reason. Even though writing or drawing equals doing something. Since it takes effort, is something that doesn't happen unless you put effort into it, and getting exactly what you want is far easier when you put your effort into it.

Like for writing. I want more Hyūga screen time for the Naruto series. It apparently isn't going to happen in canon. I could read other fanfics that do that. But then again, to get what I want, I would need to put my own effort in. I could give the idea to someone, but they'd likely do it differently.

IzzyMarrie In reply to Jedi-Qui-Gon [2016-04-06 22:32:28 +0000 UTC]

People who draw and write put their heart into what they do, and so for all that effort to be dismissed as 'doing nothing', yeah, it's hurtful.

Exactly!  I agree definitely.  That's the reason why I'm writing With(out) The Sun, because I really wanted to give the zetsu justice because I felt a little more could have been done to make them terrific.  Same with Marble Hornets, I felt like it was the perfect opportunity for character study, and I worked my butt off and poured a lot of my own social anxieties and fears into some of those lines.

Jedi-Qui-Gon In reply to IzzyMarrie [2016-04-07 23:33:01 +0000 UTC]

Don't blame you at all, it would be hurtful. Those who claim its “doing nothing” while doing hobbies and stuff that don't pay the bills are hypocrites, since they're doing the thing they hate. The world can be so backwards sometimes...there's true value in art. I don't even know where we would be without art. And there are those who get paid for doing art so it can be considered a real job, there is stuff like that out there.

. That's completely understandable, more could be done with the Zetsu. The concept is very interesting.

IzzyMarrie In reply to Jedi-Qui-Gon [2016-04-08 01:09:10 +0000 UTC]

Yeah..  ^_^  Really though, it feels like writing's been the only way I can express myself for years.

I loved the concept, but yeah, it could've had a little more done with it
