Lol.. my parents are supportive of me and my dreams. My father actually went to college to pursue a dream similar to mine, and my mother is the type of person who thinks you can do anything you set your mind to, just go to college. ;D; I am sorry not everyone else is so lucky.

My parents do this. My mom is the biggest culprit though.

My mum once said 'drawing is nothing' to me, (I can't remember why, but I was in a snarky mood that morning) and I said: 'Oh really? So, if drawing is nothing, how come we need blueprints DRAWN out for the architecture of the buildings YOU live and work in, the plans for vechile parts DRAWN out so YOU have a car and public transport to move around in, designs DRAWN out for musical instruments so YOU have entertainment, computer blueprints DRAWN out for YOU to do work on and all the posters, flyers, intros to your favourite TV shows and TV adverts planned and DRAWN out before they're made, hm?'

I'm pretty sure I was sent to my room after being told off, thankfully I didn't get grounded, but my mum never questioned me drawing ever again.

My parents refuse to understand how my animation career works...They stopped pulling the "ur too old to watch cartoons" card on me, after I went off to college to study animation. But now, it's the "U ALREADY GOT A PORTFOLIO! U DON'T NEED TO UPDATE IT WITH NEW ART! THE STUDIOS SHOULD BE FINE WITH WHAT U HAVE NAO!" card and the "When I was your age" bullshit, as if life for them at my age was EXACTLY THE SAME as it is today.
NO, MOM. Studios don't want to see shit that I did over a year ago. They want to see fresh new art. And NO, MOM. When you were my age, the economy wasn't shit, rent in California was incredibly fucking cheap, and the job market was great because anybody was looking to hire anyone with a pulse. All of that is the exact opposite now.

Falling-Into-Chaos In reply to World-Hero21 [2016-04-06 10:57:37 +0000 UTC]

Oh, the 'when I was your age' always annoys me. What makes them think life is the same now as it was when they were kids? There are no longer only three channels on TV, playing with a yoyo in the garden isn't going to entertain me (I'm not kidding, my dad once suggested playing with one outside so I could 'get out more'), and we have a lot more things to worry about because of stupid stereotypes and even harder classwork. Plus, the studios will never be content with what you had a year ago that got you into college, because they've already seen that. They want to see your improvement, the new skills you've developed and what you've done with that improvement and skills. Besides, you go to college to work and improve so you CAN get a job in the field you want and will enjoy, you can't expect there to be no work, and if they don't want you to be what you want to be, then it basically means they want you to get a job you don't enjoy, and won't work as hard as you could do at because for you, it's a drag, and therefore you won't get as much money. In which case, if they don't want you to have enough money to get a decent job with good pay and be able to support yourself, no offence, but that's pretty stupid of your parents to think.

On another note, animation keeps the world turning in a lot of ways, TV and computer adverts for one can make a lot of money, cartoons are another obvious factor, I'm presuming video games as well (sorry, I don't know to much about them besides graphic designers) and there are so many other things that animation is included in as well.

Aaaand, rant over! Sorry if that went on for a while, things like this just get me so annoyed.

"Parents can be the harshest critics and meanest viewers when it comes to art in any shape or form. Because to simply put it, they probably had the same done to them, or if not, thats just how most adults are. Its best to just ignore them from what they say, just in order to protect that fire in the heart for art. "

I didn't favourite this because I relate to this. I favourited this because I think it's just silly that some parents think that drawing is doing nothing. I don't relate to this because my parents are happy that I'm drawing now. However, this is not only a well-done piece, but one that shows me a problem that I didn't know that some people in the community had and that's just sad.Β

As if I didn't appreciate artists enough, like. XD
