Pokemon Diamond and Pearl Versions only had 2 fire-types available in the main story. I was really happy when that changed in Pokemon Platinum.Β

Funny thing is, when I played through Platinum, I went with Ponyta, which was one of those two. Still, I don't regret it. I had to force myself not to use it against Candice because it was making the entire game too easy and the rest of my team needed to catch up.

As far back as R/B/Y I'd casually raise a team up to lv.100 and there was absolutely no challenge whatsoever, even with type disadvantage. Up through Crystal I had a universally adapted Tyranitar (Flamethrower, Comet Punch, Earthquake, ... and I forgot the 4th move) I'd use solo to beat the Elite ...uh, 5, just for fun/quick cash or to utilize that Exp. Share with a just-hatched Pokemon.

I'm not that big on solo runs through a game's E4. I usually prefer to try it using weak PokΓ©mon like Pichu or Jigglypuff. Come to think of it, I don't think I've actually used a Jigglypuff on one of those runs. I should change that sometime.
I did do a solo run in HeartGold with a Lv. 100 Mewtwo without using any items whatsoever. I swept the competition, of course, until I reached Lance's last PokΓ©mon, his Gyarados. I was out of PP for Psychic and Thunderbolt, leaving me with only Aura Sphere (which it resisted) and Recover. It was tedious due to him still having all four of his Full Restores, but I eventually triumphed. I ran the numbers afterward, and if he had started going on the offensive after just two or three Dragon Dances, he would've won, as that would've forced me onto the defensive. Even at +6, it would've only been a 2-hit KO, which could've also been achieved at +3, so the extra Dragon Dances were wasteful.

Could you enlighten me about Full Restores/Max Potions they use? For some reason they heal but the after effect is leaving that particular Pokemon more vulnerable. Say an attack you do brings it down to 20% health, a restoration is used, do the same attack and it's a one-hit KO. Did that carry into the newer generations? I never witnessed any AI using healing items much in HG/SS, Diamond/Pearl, etc... and haven't had a working DS in a while so I'm a wee bit behind on trends and Mega-forms.Β

Jphyper In reply to A-New-Lesson [2016-08-30 05:15:25 +0000 UTC]
In any Pokemon game regardless of generation, NPCs are limited to a maximum of four healing items. Usually, only Champions have this many, though. In the case of health restoration items (the most commonly-used NPC items), they're used when their Pokemon's HP drops below a certain percentage. Sometimes they seem to be set to only use them on specific Pokemon, while at other times they'll use it on any Pokemon.
As for the getting down to 20%, then healing, then an OHKO, that is a separate mechanic and has indeed been carried over. Whenever a damaging move is used, a random value is assigned so the attack does between 80% and 100% damage inclusively.

The more you know. Thanks for all the input. I now have to decide whether or not to jump back in the game but I'm a little intimidated with the number of creatures there are. I struggled enough with 320-something, sort of spotty on up to 493 ending with Arceus and now there are 721? with another bunch on the way if I'm not mistaken.
I laugh at this because imagine in the Pkmn universe just when all the research is kinda done there's another batch of them. Forget everything you know, rewrite/print literature and the Nurses going 'now what the heck is that?' before healing.

They compensate for the increased numbers by making it easier to trade and obtain them.

All gym leaders whom use PokΓ©mon primarily weak to fire:
Erika, Bugsy, Jasmine, Pryce(??, dude has a dewgong so that might stop you.), Gardenia, Byron, Candice, Cilan, Burgh, Brycen, Viola, Ramos, and Wulfric.
So yeah. Make those idiot's world burn. (Yes, I just spend 15 minutes getting an accurate list just to state how many gym leaders have teams that are weak to fire.) I excluded the elite four of each region because this list was long enough already.

To which I say: Electric attack (Thunder and thunderpunch are suprisingly common moves among fire pokemon starters) for Water, and Scald for the last two.

Those aren't stab moves though, they're good moves, but the three who were saying hi early will still be the ones dealing the most damage here.

Despite what the competitive meta says (I think it's a load of crap anyways) STAB isn't nearly as important as the elemental advantage on your moves.
π: 0 β©: 1
Cosmic-Turtle In reply to PhantasyPen [2016-08-30 08:07:08 +0000 UTC]
Sorry, dude! But it actually is important. Almost every main series game makes mention of how it's a mechanic, it's not something that fans just decided on. Why do you think players make sure their Pokemon knows at least one move in their set that matches it's type?
π: 0 β©: 1
PhantasyPen In reply to Cosmic-Turtle [2016-08-30 15:03:19 +0000 UTC]
Oh don't get me wrong, I know STAB is important, I just think that competitive players take it (and a lot of other things) way too seriously and blow it up out of proportion to what it really is.
π: 0 β©: 1
Cosmic-Turtle In reply to PhantasyPen [2016-08-30 20:24:49 +0000 UTC]
It's for good reason though. Every little boost is important, STAB moves, held items, IV's, and natures, they all make a good difference.

PhantasyPen In reply to Cosmic-Turtle [2016-08-31 01:07:26 +0000 UTC]
Not saying you're wrong, but I will say that when an entire community reacts to any deviation or change that is deemed "unoptimized" by going "LOL YOU DUMB**** DONT U KNO THAT ONLY COMBINATION XYZ IS A VALID USE OF W?" that community has forgotten the meaning of fun.
π: 0 β©: 1
Cosmic-Turtle In reply to PhantasyPen [2016-08-31 05:44:31 +0000 UTC]
Yeah true, competitive players can be a handful at times. I'v had moments where I would beat a player using all shiny Pokemon with perfect IV's and then tell me that I was the one using cheats. Or getting upset that I beat their team of all dragon or fire types and having trouble admitting that even their favorite types have weaknesses and aren't perfect.
I don't go online anymore thanks to them.
