Description @ProjectCommenters: This is actually my first digital painting in years (my second digital painting ever), and in general I have lots of trouble with colors (you can see my gallery is largely black and white). So any constructive tips and tricks on how to improve in those areas is much appreciated!

Holy bejeezus. Look, there's color!

I've been on an FMA bend recently, and RoyxRiza is OTP (not up for debate). I really really really wanted to paint recently, and figured that learning colors in Photoshop would be easier than learning it in watercolor (it was tho...digital painting is so much haxx >_>) Somehow, it seems to have worked(?). At least, I like how it turned out. Like, a lot. I'll definitely be doing more digital paintings in the future.

Blues, oranges, blacks...it turned out looking like an American superhero comic

Well, this might be my last real submission for a while. School is looking to take over my life for the next 2 months. I get antsy if I go long periods without drawing though, so there might be some uploads here and there.

Here for ProjectComment Β
I assume the sketchy style is something you wanted to achieve here. It looks quite expressive and I might need to know the characters to fully understand the picture... so please bear with me because I only watched one episode of FMA in my whole life... ^^"Β
The overall colors and mood of the piece are really cool. Well done!

There are a few suggestions on my part which might (or might not) help you for future pictures.Β
Light source (says the person who never knows where her own light source is coming from *cough*) is not very clear here... the guy is illuminated mostly from the front, the girl from both sides...Β
The following is a personal thing I might have done with a similar picture - a "white" (or nearly white, very bright yellow) outline at the most illuminated parts, to also give it more of a "closed" feeling.Β

I want to say that I like the blue/yellow color combination you have going here. Complimentary colors this looks good together.Β
So yes, all in all a very expressionistic and interesting (in a good way) piece :3

Keep it up!!

Hello, I love your artwork ! I'm from ProjectComment and I will try to be as constructive as I can

At first, I did not understand they were Roy Mustang and Riza Hawkeye from Fullmetal Alchemist. Indeed, as you said it yourself, you have Americanized these characters and I love it ! It's a very personal intrepretation of the characters you made. I recognize the scene you used as a reference and I can feel the strenght of this high point ! The lines seem quickie but when I don't look at too closely, all the lines are cohenrent between themselves ! For a second try, your digital painting is much than convincing from my perspective !

I can't tell you any trick or tip about the way to paint since I don't paint myself but I think you already have learned by yourself how the light and shading work, even in colours.

The way you disposed the colours reminds me about some artworks from the videogame Metal Gear Solid.

Keep on practicing and you will quickly reach the level you aspire to become !

Aw, thank you!

Can you link me to some of the MGS artworks you were talking about? I'm not too familiar with the game and when I googled it I just got screenshots from the gameplay. I'm really intrigued to see what similar things professional artists have done!

Unfortunately, I did not find the artwork I had in mind but maybe you will understand what I mean by "the disposition of colours" thanks to these Artworks

Β  wow, I really love that style! Very flattered that my drawing reminded you of it! I keep it in mind and see if I can pull out more things like that in the future :3

I really enjoy the lighting in this piece. That's not a common thing for me to focus on, but it's neat how from just the luminescence of an explosion you outline the figures of the characters and give their clothing sensible folds - the valleys and creases in their jackets and trousers are highly convincing. I would suggest treating the woman's hair in a similar fashion - yes, hairs are technically their own objects, but so are threads of garments; treat the hair as its own unitary object for light to be cast upon so that it only hits one angle of it instead of the whole mass of hair.

I do have a question about the woman's shirt: why is it illuminated even more strongly than any part of the man despite her being farther away from the light source? The guy should be more blindingly lit; maybe you could (in the future) fix things like this up by adding some glare to the figures closest to the blinding light in Photoshop, on a separate layer with a low-hardness, high-opacity white brush or something. Also, maybe add more brightness to the explosion itself? Either way, again, great job with the figures.

I was definitely having trouble with her hair - initially I tried doing lighting the just from the front like I did for the man's, but it was really difficult to balance shadows while still making it look blond. But I definitely see your point, I've been working on techniques to render hair and I'm going to try to make it blockier the next time around, as you say.

Oh hm, I see what you mean by the shirt - it looks like I used a way more saturated yellow on hers than his and that makes it look very bright. Thank you for catching that, I'd never have noticed myself!

Absolutely stunning! It looks like they are walking through fire, a blaze in sense of emotion and will! I'm just watching through FMA right now and really enjoying it! I really love the stance you've gave Roy, and Riza's hair and expression! Two major clashes of character, wonderful!

This was my favorite episode from the Brotherhood. That episode was hardcore!
RoyXRiza are one of my favorite anime shipping of all time.
I love the lighting of this, it's really hot. That expression you gave Roy is really at it, I feel all of his emotion.
