Description
This regal rat represents Ananke, the primordial Greek goddess of fate and necessity. She represents destiny, and is often depicted with a spindle where she weaves fate for all beings. She sits on a Rowan branch, filled with brilliant red-orange berries which symbolize protection against negativity, and express wisdom. This piece took a long while to make due to its personal nature to me. I'm happy with how it turned out though.
About 4x12 inches. Scratchboard and watercolor, with a small amount of gouache (and the requisite digital touching up to remove dust and debris from my horrible scanner)

Love the lines and flow of this piece. I was cusrious, is the rat part of the personal side of the piece or is it the creature you would mosrt associate with Ananke's sphere, or simply a love of rats? Not meaning to pry at all, just curious.

I have been using rats lately as a representation of different aspects of dreams I've had, or problems I may be going through in my life. In this case, I've been really interested in fate and predestination; the nature of inevitability and free will. Ananke is the goddess of all these things, and seemed an appropriate way to express this.

So then the rat(s) represents the little piece of you in the aspect/theme of the art work. Interesting way to go about it! Thankthee for taking the time to reply and explain. (:
(and I do appologise if this should appear twice, seem to have a reply box hiccup).

The rats are back! I really love the texture and shading here, not to mention the symbolism. Something about her face keeps bringing my eyes back to it... It's really interesting to see how your art has progressed from dark to light

I don't think I can leave the rats just yet! I have a few more to do I think before I'm done.
