How to attract birds in New Mexico. Birdseed helps, but water is what they really want!
When I moved into this house, one of the first things I did was build this birdbath, fountain combination. Last winter, a covey (family) of quail were happy to discover it and became daily visitors. I shot this photo out of my kitchen window.

Yes. Underneath the basin is a 10 gallon heavy plastic storage container that acts as a reservoir. That much water is freeze-proof(at least around here) so all I need is something to keep the exposed water from freezing.
