Description
Oil on Canvas 30 X 36 inches.Back in 2014 a Rescue/Released Cooper's hawk showed up in my yard (she was wearing a metal leg band with numbers printed on it....allowing me to track down her origins). She was struggling, so I began feeding her a mouse a day to help keep her going and in return was able to get some decent photos. This painting is basically a copy of a photo with a landscape added.

She made it through that first Winter, then vanished in March (I think it was). I had read somewhere that only about 1 in 10 hawks survive to maturity, so I assumed the worst. Then in September (on my birthday in fact) I looked up to see her perched outside my window. The camera was handy, so I took the picture that I used for this painting. She hung around that winter too, then went her way.
I lost count of the mice who gave their all for her survival...a lot. I felt sorry for them. They were store mice and very trusting and tame. The only consolation was that she was an excellent huntress. They did not suffer.

Thank you! I am donating it to the Wildlife Center for their annual auction....I hope it gets a good bid: they are chronically in need of money to feed their critters.
