Description This was originally a mermaid, then got changed to something like this image, under the title Masquerade.  I did some more work on it, and at a friend's suggestion, renamed it Aganippe after a Greek naiad who occasionally appeared as a winged black horse.  The name Aganippe literally translates to : Gentle Horse.  I decided to just re-submit the image.
The image is oil on canvas
36"X48"
I had some help with the dress from mjranum-stock with this photo: fav.me/d55fgqi
Original painting available.  For information: www.facebook.com/theFinnsgalle…

Thank you!  It was quite an odyssey to figure out what the image would look like...she started as a mermaid...and I am still not quite sure what it represents.  Anyway, I am glad you enjoyed looking at it!

Thought your work looked familiar. Lost your name last time. Won't make that mistake again.

I always see this on your page, and think how beautiful it is, and I especially love the removal of her mask.  There are a lot of different elements that give this image a sense of strength and vulnerability as well.  The maiden is sheltered by an amazing Pegasus statue, the large ringed planet and the smaller moon,  give a sense of cosmic awareness.  The muted colors on the water that reflect the colors of the planet, moon, and sky, and those lovely flowers and lily pads almost hiding behind the base she is resting on.  I can see why you got a Daily Deviation!  You deserve it!

Thank you!   This painting went through a lot of incarnations before it got here.  The mask was a late addition: my reaction to someone saying she wasn't pretty enough.  I kind of liked the idea that she goes on enjoying her world in peace while holding up the mask so that people who need to see that kind of conventional, Hollywood version of beauty will quit bothering her.

I have a thing about masks and always have because as a very young child I saw that sometimes monsters hide behind masks.  I collect them actually, as in ceramic ones and bisque ones that are beautiful.  I wrote that poem that is here too, but we all do wear them.  The face we show the world at large is different than what we show friends, family and significant others.  I think for most of us it is a matter of trust as to how much we let others see the real person we are.

Then of course there are those that hide for darker reasons, or those who are more into appearance and not substance.  I know, heavy conversation for the day, huh?

It is truly my pleasure,  that image is beautiful!

A friend of mine liked the mask because, as she said, it spoke to her about the mask she had to wear for the world...and here we see her removing it so she can enjoy the scenery.  A slightly different take and I am glad that I presented the image with enough ambiguity that she could see it that way.
Enough deep thought!  I'm just glad you enjoyed it!
