This photoshop painting was an exercise/experiment is not using any reference. While I'm satisfied (mostly) with the results, I would absolutely recommend using reference. Even with this picture I intended up cheating and using some reference. The problem was that, while my illustration was backlit, the dark shadows on the robot's front weren't there. Thus, I had a pic with a sun in the back and lighting in the front. Didn't work. It wasn't until I held a toy to the sun and snapped a couple photos that the lighting scheme became clear. Moral of the story, use reference and save yourself the headache.
