Description Practical Traditional Paint Color Mixing Tutorial

I made this with my watercolors, but it can be used as a guide for acrylic paints and oil paints.

I had a very hard time with watercolors for a very long time. When I started reading websites and books on some color mixing techniques, it started to click. This is my small contribution to the community that will hopefully be of some value.

Update 28-10-07
Tweaked some readability issues
Gave some suggestions on other common names for the paints I recommended
Added a mini description on how to mix color progression samples

EDIT OMG a DD?! I am honored that =IBinsanity and ^bleedsopretty felt this would be valuable to share in this manner.

very helpfull indeed, i dont even know to use oil colors yet, but i'm trying out making pastel (mixing color pigments), and, hey!, is really hard to know how much pigment i have to mix, but i think that gonna be fun to figure it out

( I think you should add the Colour Index numbers to the colours, just to avoid confusion. I know you said you wanted to avoid it but I think it's necessary to avoid brand confusion.)

KelliRoos In reply to GH-MoNGo [2007-10-29 17:52:03 +0000 UTC]

I am very hesitant to do that. If I put them on, I would need to explain them properly, and I haven't come up with a succinct way to do that. I really want to keep this tut as simple as I can, as to not intimidate people who are already intimidated by colors.

I am interested in describing pigments, but am unsure if it would be better served in another tutorial.

I will continue thinking about it though, it is vital info for intermediate/advanced painters.

GH-MoNGo In reply to KelliRoos [2007-10-29 22:33:10 +0000 UTC]

If you don't, I will.

But then I'd have to go out and buy tubes of each pigment so I could get an accurate scan of what they look like. And I'm poor already as it is.

KelliRoos In reply to GH-MoNGo [2007-10-30 03:55:47 +0000 UTC]

hmmm, I will put my thinking cap on. BTW, didn't you have a pigment log in your journal? I can't find it.

This would actually be helpful for me since I'm getting tired of trying to get the perfect ruddy orange for a fox I'm painting on wood with acrylics. So I hope this will help ease my frustrations a bit.

And save some paint in the process
