Description One of my favorite characters from Norse mythology, Sif is the goddess of wheat and wife of Thor, god of thunder and probably the greatest warrior among the Aesir. A few months back a friend and I were discussing Sif and found we had two very different ideas when it came to her characterization. My friend imagined her as a warrior woman, like a valkyrie, due to her being married to a warrior like Thor. I, however, tend to have a more domestic version of her. I've always imagined her as someone who was naturally shy but with a sort of quiet, resilient strength. I love badass women as much as the next girl, but there is more than one way to be strong and badass and we as women find that strength and fulfillment in different ways. Why should the ancient goddesses have been any different?

Maybe soon I'll do Thrud too. Be nice to have both mother and daughter in my gallery.

I think of Sif as being domestic and a warrior.
You did a good job.

I also imagine Sif as a more domestic woman, partly because that was how she was portrayed in the Danish comic Valhalla that I read as a teenager. But I've understood that she's more of a Valkyrie in the Marvel comics?

That is quite true in the Marvel comics, but I'm not too fond of how Marvel handles Norse mythology in general...mostly because I'm still bitter that my favorite couple, Sif and Thor, are not actually together and instead Thor gets with some human woman. Also giving Sif black hair instead of gold kinda bothers me too because that's one of my favorite myths. Basically Marvel took out a lot of the stuff I liked about Norse mythology. XD

Don't get me wrong, there are quite a few Marvel heroes and stories that I like. I love what the movies have done with Captain America I've enjoyed watching Daredevil on Netflix (mostly for Karen Page), but their Thor stuff just isn't for me. XD

I did find DC's handling of Greek mythology in Wonder Woman pretty decent though. I just feel they could have done a little more with Ares.

From the little I've seen I'm not too fond of how Marvel handles Norse mythology, either. But their comics and movies probably make some people interested enough to go and check up the real myths, and that's nice.

True. There is always that. And often I see that they find the original source material to be far more interesting. I think this is likely because mythology doesn't have to adhere to the tone, plot formulas, and tropes that have become a staple of modern media. I find that a lot of the time when mythology is put into film or comics, the crazier parts are toned down so that it's more palatable to a general audience.
