Description ~Multimedia Poser Tutorial 1~

Yay!! 100,000 page hits!!

**IMPORTANT**
You will need Adobe "Flash Player 10", so make sure to upgrade your player to the latest version or else the tutorial might not run at all. Updating your Flash player is very easy - just go here [link] and get it installed. If you can press a button, you can do it!

Want to get started with the 3D program I used to create my entire dA gallery? Here is your chance! This is an easy to follow interactive multimedia presentation that will give you step-by-step instructions to help you learn the Poser 7 basic concepts and functionality.

The tutorial covers the basics such as configuring the 3D workspace, loading figures, posing them, loading clothes, conforming clothes to figures, using materials, hair, lights, cameras, and much more. I wrote about 13 chapters for this tutorial, and you will be asked which ones you want to see, so you can skip chapters whenever you want. Each chapter is loaded with notes and hints that might help you get the best out of Poser 7.

This is my very first tutorial and I don't have a clue how useful it will be to you, so feedback is important if you want it to improve. This was designed for you to use side by side with Poser, so you can follow the instructions hands-on directly in the program. This was NOT meant to teach you how to use Poser without the program. For that I would have to go insane with screen-caps and the tutorial would be come too large to be practical. As it is now it is about 750Kb, which is not bad for 13 interactive multimedia chapters.

As a side note, people have asked me to create a tutorial about how to get started with Poser, but I never gave it much thought until I've learned Flash programming. A Poser tutorial would otherwise be too much work to do with plain HTML on a web page, but with AS3 (ActionScript3) it's a different story. Not only I can present much more information in a single area, but I can also make it multimedia and interactive.

Instead of fiddling with rather painful Flash timelines, I decided to use my "AGE-4" game engine (written entirely in AS3) and create a tutorial that runs like a Japanese graphic novel. I don't think anybody has done that before (that I know of). This way, creating the tutorial was a matter of writing a text script for my AGE-4 game engine and let it generate the interactive multimedia presentation for me. So in the end, no painful Flash timelines were used (yay!!). ^^

All AS3 programming here was created 100% by me from scratch, including the "AGE-4" game engine that was used to create this tutorial. The "Ken" 3D avatar shown in this tutorial was designed by me, 3D clothing created by me, and figure is AnimeDoll by MayaX. A Spanish version is coming next, kindly translated by ~villena-mx directly from Mexico! Many thanks to him for the Spanish translation collab work! ^__^

Hope you like and thanks for coming by!

I already talked to their webmaster, and he said he would investigate the possibilities of allowing Flash contents on Rosity. He came back to me later claiming there is pressure to forbid Flash because of "security" issues involved in embedded scripting. Considering how ActionScript works inside a *very* secured sandbox, I can't imagine what kind of risks those would be. In the end I suspect they are acting out of ignorance because they don't really know what they are talking about. And why bother? It's just easier to say "no" and lay back leaving things as they are.

probably they are scared that their database might get corrupt >_> and yeah maybe they dont want flash stuff...

ActionScript cannot be used to hack a website, unless the Flash file is posted by one of the site admins who has access to site internal passwords. But in that case, if such admin wanted to do damage to the site, their wouldn't need Flash for that at all.

yeah and i think its impossible for ActionScript to totally ruin it

AS3 security forbids programs to read local information and send it elsewhere, so no info stealing is possible. It can only read data it created itself, so it cannot be used to cause damage to the OS or whatever. It can only access data with written permission from a webmaster, so it can't even do disk operations outside of its own sandbox. How AS3 can be dangerous to RO is still beyond me...

I think it's perfectly harmless.
So much that dA allows it and nothing happened this far.

Glad to see you decided to post this after all for the kiriban. As far as first tutorials go, I think you pulled it off quite well. I even learned a few things that I didn't know about Poser.

Here's hoping you eventually make some advanced tutorials as well.

Thank you! I wanted to start from the beginnings by covering the basics. Now that's this is done, I can go for more advanced topics in the next tutorials.

congratulations on the tutorial release. it is straightforward and rather well planned. i did notice a typo on the word "adjust" somewhere in there, but that's a small thing.

ken1171 In reply to Tenebere [2009-02-28 06:34:58 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the hint, I am actually counting on people's feedback to make this tutorial error-free. I already fixed the typo and will upload the fixed version as soon as I finish revising the Spanish version. I just received the Spanish translation tonight, and revising it has been tough because there is little I can do to fix translation mistakes in that language. Will be posting the Spanish version soon.

perhaps your spanish literate fans will do likewise with reporting any mistakes that should crop up.

It's hard for Villena-MX to translate because he doesn't know Poser very well, so he is not familiar with the terms and functionality. I already found a number of mistakes with the translation, so it will need another revision. I fixed everything I could with my knowledge of Spanish, but the rest will have to be handled by Villena-MX because he is a native speaker.

Oh yes, this is just the *very* basics - what you need to get started and render your first 3D scene. There is already a lot of people asking for more advanced topics, but for starters I wanted to keep things simple.

This tutorial project was actually to test the new version of my "AGE-4" game engine, which was also fully created with ActionScript 3. AGE-4 is a data-driven program that creates this kind of presentations by executing a text script that describes the scenes and dialogs. To create a new presentation, all I need to do is provide another text script, which is not AS3 but an actual story script. AGE-4 interprets the story script and generates the multimedia presentation in real-time.

I will use this game engine for a collab work with ~RosaKiddy to create our 1st interactive manga project somewhere in the near future. ^^
