Description This was a legitimate pain in the ass. I hope you appreciate it!

This is a VERY VERY LONG TUTORIAL. If you click the DOWNLOAD button, you'll download a 3mg pdf file that is over 100pages long.

You can also see a webpage version by going here:

--> [link] <--

And if that link doesn't work, go here
--> [link] <--

(I recommend just using the web version since I don't think I did the PDF quite right... lol)

This tutorial covers low-poly for real-time Modeling, Smoothing Groups, UV Unwrapping, Texture Creation of Face, Clothing, and Hands, and creation of Hair.

I take a character from start to finish and explain pretty much every single step.

I like your technique for the hair, the idea of just bringing in patches of hair and arranging them as you go is so simple and clever I never even thought of it.

Is there any way to do the textures on metasequoia??

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Athey In reply to cinnamelon [2011-06-20 17:47:02 +0000 UTC]

Uh - until your comment, I'd never even heard of metasequoia, so I really know nothing about it. It doesn't appear to be a 'making textures' sort of program though. It appears to have a 3d paint feature, but I'd hardly call it advanced at all. What other 3d applications do you have access to?

If you go here: [link] and scroll down and expand the section for 3D Studio Max 2012, you can download the student version for free.

Go down a little further and expand the section on Autodesk Maya and you can download it for free.
Maya has a 3d paint tool that allows you to pain directly onto the mesh.... In fact... I think 3dsmax does as well, I've just never used it. In any case - I wouldn't ever recommend using either. All 3d paint tools that come in 3d software sucks balls unless you're using zbrush or deeppaint - but they have a set of tools specifically intended for making textures in 3d space.

I have no idea if mudbox has any advanced in-app texture painting tools, but I think it might. Mudbox is ALSO from autodesk, so you can download the student version of it for free on the same page. So... grab 3ds Max, Maya, and Mudbox and give them all a shot.

3d Studio Max - I think I was using version 7 or 8 when I made this tutorial. It's pretty old.

Very useful tutorial, just followed bits of it to help with a model I'm working on.

One question, after you've finished texturing the model do you then convert it back to an editable poly to join all the parts back together?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Athey In reply to stray-shadow [2011-03-30 17:04:14 +0000 UTC]

You can. I have in the past, but also I haven't on some things. It's entirely dependent on personal taste and what you're using the model for.

Cool!! I'm just starting to learn 3D so this is a great help! Thanks

By the way, the character made in this tutorial will be "stiff" like an action figure or "movable" like a puppet? Like, I can move around his arms and make him do different poses or not?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Athey In reply to AngelERenoir [2010-09-23 06:37:22 +0000 UTC]

This tutorial doesn't cover rigging the character (attaching it to bones so you can animate it - i.e. making it a puppet). So until you rig it, the character is just stiff like an action figure.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AngelERenoir In reply to Athey [2010-09-23 07:10:14 +0000 UTC]

Oh, ok. Do you know any tutorials for rigging?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 3

Athey In reply to AngelERenoir [2010-10-04 23:46:28 +0000 UTC]

Oh, but that tutorial uses the Physique modifier. Just so you know, there's an alternative. Instead of using Physique, try using Skin. I've used both (Physique is an old standard, and waaaay back in the day when the studio I'm working at made ps2 games, our engine only supposed Physique, so I'm more than familiar with it) The thing is that Skin is probably a much better choice. -Especially- if you're rigging something a little more high poly. Super low poly is fine with Physique, but the more dense the mesh becomes, the more annoying it is to try and rig it with Physique. The envelopes in Skin help a lot, plus Skin has a mirror weights feature, but Physique doesn't.

This was just posted today and I thought I'd point you to it since it's a rigging tutorial - [link]

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

Athey In reply to AngelERenoir [2010-09-27 21:51:38 +0000 UTC]

I don't specifically. I'm basically self-taught on rigging, and it's been ages since I needed to look up a tutorial for anything like that so I'm not really familiar with any. You could try looking on 3dtotal.com under the tutorials section. That sight has a rather large list of tutorials on it, so there's sure to be a few there.
