Description In the past I've submitted front-view face edge loop images, and they can be helpful if you want to model that specific face, and you can try and copy that edge flow for your own original plans as well, but it doesn't necessary help you to /understand/ what's going on, so that you can better create your own edge flow for a face.

So I threw this together. The 'edges' shown here aren't the exact edges that you'd use, but rather a guide of what general area and shape you'd try to put edges into.

I also color coded three patches that are important.

The 'mask' around the eyes.
The flow down the side of the nose, coming from the eyes.
The flow coming from the nostril down and around the mouth.

If you can get those areas edged out nicely, you'll get the best deformation when trying to animate your face for expressions and lip sync.

Thank you. This is helpful, with fewer unnecessary polygons than other references I've seen. Much obliged!

i only want to add that, while this is a good reference for beginners, nobody seems to have mentioned anything about the star formed on the cheek. from my own bitter experience with facial animation - that star is better off moved closer to the ear, to an area that doesn't get animated. it makes for ugly deformations there in the middle of the cheek.

Oh no, my mesh has a star there too.

A good reference for many people, it isn't too complex so it shouldn't scare people away upon looking at it... unlike my own works [link] fear the ears, for they are evil if done in the slightest bit wrong.

lol - yeah, this is definitely not intended to be referenced verbatim. It's just to show the general areas and shapes where loops should be placed. That's also why it's a three-quarter's view instead of a straight front or side angle.

My thoughts exactly. But as Athy said "The 'edges' shown here aren't the exact edges that you'd use, but rather a guide of what general area..." Some clean up would definitely be needed as there 5 sided shapes around the lips and some crazy curves at the nose that would need more quads among other things. Its a nice concept but it needs a lot of explanation to be helpful to a beginner.

Athy, hope you don't mind the critique from some one you don't know.

im relatively a beginner and i find it interesting and helpful. Having used Maya a bit i feel confident that i could use this reference and just fix the n-Gons.

the ears are evil, they screw up my poly count and flow... they are evil.
