Description
Made in 3dsmax6, rendered with mentalray and hdri. This is kind of "work in progress", so please tell me what could be better, what should be changed and any other comments you might have?Related content

mm nice HDRI and caustics. are you using HDRI projected lighting or just for the reflectons?

Thanks. I'm using it both for projected lighting and reflections, yes.

I don't think all your objects are on the same plane. Put something shaped like your cube on a flat surface and then place pencils in the position of your needles and you'll see what I mean.

Hmm... they ARE on the same plane... I'm not sure I understood what you meant, even after putting pencils and a cube on the floor

Ok - here are my thoughts - take em how you like em or not lol...
Overall it looks nice and interesting and is on its way. I like the difuse color that is on the gound passed though the liquid. Is that some polygon edging i'm seeing on the syringe cutout on the fornt of the red one or is that just some odd reflections? I'd like to see a little more intensity in the shadows behind the cube (for more depth) and less reflection of the inner rounded corners inside the cube. Also i like the close shot but some of the distortion on the end of the plunger (right side of image) is taking something away for me. Perhaps you may want to try instead of a close up lens pull the camera straight back from where it is and use a zoom lens. it will fill the frame how you like while decreasing the distortions. Speaking of the plunger... I'd add more detail to the front face of the plunger - inside where the fluid is. They generally arn't just flat discs inside like that and some detail visable inside the fluid would be nice even if its very subtle. Lastly... I would suggest adding some sort of very small indent or pressure point to where the needle pierces the surface. It can be as small as you like to keep the surface very solid looking but as is the reflection just blends right in with the needle and flattens out the image. Any small distortion will focus you to the insertion point as well as adding visual interest. Ohh also some sort of measurment ticks either on the glass or on the plunger itself would add a nice detail touch and interest too.
Are you sorry you asked??? lol ;-P Seriously its on its way and I could say more of what IS working but those parts you already have done.
good luck.

Thank you very much. No, I'm not sorry I asked. I'm actually very happy for all your comments. Without comments I don't know what people don't like about it, so I need comments to make the finished version better. Again, thank you!
And I'm not sure if I understood the part about... "Also i like the close shot but some of the distortion on the end of the plunger (right side of image) is taking something away for me. Perhaps you may want to try instead of a close up lens pull the camera straight back from where it is and use a zoom lens. it will fill the frame how you like while decreasing the distortions."
Do you think you could explain that a bit more... if it's not too much to ask for?

Hey there - sure I can try...
Basically - if you take a camera and shoot your friend up close your gonna get a distorted effect from the lens. The same is happening on the far right of your image to the plunger end. A trick used when shooting cars sometimes is to simply shoot them from farther away but use a zoom lens. This way the object or car or whatever can still fill the image/screen/shot but won't be subject to the distortions that the lens creates when shooting up close. It may even help you eat up some of the dead space around the image. A little more dramatic lighting like the shadows i mentioned will help add more depth to the overall shot also.
hope that helps...

So... you mean distortion caused by FOV, I see. I kind of like such distortions but I'll see how it might look without it. Thanks again!

OH I agree - I like those types of distortions as well. However in your piece I find it to look a little odd - it should eithr be gone or more emphasized. As it is it just makes that plunger look odd somehow. Let me know when you put the next version online.

Oh hey sorry I must of missed when it got posted. I checked the link and I gotta say - here here... MUCH better. The distortion is gone. The measure marks addition and the plunger look way better. The black of the is even a nice addition graphically I think. The small dimple it all came together very well - Nice work. ^5
I'm flattered you considered all of my comments so closely. What are you impressions of the difference in the two images? My only other suggestions now might be to add something into the reflection maps. Perhaps a mad scientist or robot face - nothing too obvious just a distorted reflection that you would really only see if you look closely. Or possibly something more simple like a simple rack of test tubes and beakers either as an environment reflection or actual elements in the background where it's a bit empty anyway. Or actually I just though as I was writing - how about the two small glass bottles that the injection fluids came from - you know the kind I mean?

Thanks! And I'm flattered that you take your time helping me make this piece as nice as possible.
I think the new one came out much better too, especially the remodelled syringes gave a much better look to the image I think. And the clearer class-cube and increased contrast made the fluid inside come out much clearer and more slimy, which I also was satisfied with. And the increased contrast also made the syringes look more like they are made of... the sort of metal they make such stuff out of
And yeah reflections... hmm... perhaps... though the main part of the image is the objects and to make a reflection of a mad scientist or something look good would be difficult. I could TRY though. Perhaps it'll look good
But about the small bottles that contains the fluid, it could have been a nice addition to fill up the image a bit more. Hmm... could add some odd text on the labels on the bottles and such too, could be nice. I'll try it and see if it'll work!

It's very nice!
I wish I was so talented with 3D modeling...
Keep up the work, I had to look 5 times at it in full view to confirm it's 3D and not real!
