Well, after doing the drawing (on illustration board, smooth surface), you fix it with a spray lacquer called Sureguard, then you paint the basic colors (the lightest the color will be in any given area) with an acrylic/gesso mixture. Then, after dry, you paint again with watercolor, firming up areas, adding local color, adjusting temperature, etc. Then, after dry, you wipe/blot away the areas you want light (you are wiping away to reveal the acrylic underneath, which is why it needs to be the lightest the area will be, or at least close, since you will be able to add the lightest lights later as well). Then, you brush over the whole thing an oil mixture of mainly violet with a little light green and lots of turpentine/turpenoid. After that is dry (about a half hour or more), you use a kneadable eraser to wide away any oil in areas you want lighter than what it now looks like. After all dry, spray with lacquer again, dry and then tighten up with acrylic and colored pencil.
