Description
OK, folks...here is the deal. I get an email saturday morning. Someone wants a Kong painting. Cool, huh? OK, he wants it by monday...Kong, buildings, planes, etc. My god, right? Well, it worked out ok, he liked it and I like it (as much as something on this kind of deadline can be liked). Even used the Payne method (sometimes called the Pain method for good reason).Whew!

Yeah, but once you do it and understand it, it is mainly a series of underpaintings really

Well, it is my way of making a living, but my illustration has not always been my main source of income...for many years, I had day jobs which were are related. Now, I am only freelance.

Well, I will try to be more clear.
First, use Illustration board, you need a firm, smooth surface
second, do your drawing, then fix it with a fixative or the lacquer spray I mentioned
next, do an underpainting with acrylic mixed with gesso (and water). Use the close to lightest color of whatever you are painting, as this color will function as your light color later
next, spray with the lacquer spray I mentioned....do it outside, it is not good for you
next, paint more detail, more color, etc, with watercolor, do this layer is if it there finished piece, or close to it
after dry, make a thin mixture of turpentine, oil colors of purple and light green (mostly purple, just a bit of green to take the saturation out). Spread as a wash in horizontal strokes over the whole thing. let dry for about half an hour, maybe a little more
use a kneadable eraser to wipe out light areas, areas you don't want the purple stain on
after dry, add details with acrylic and colored pencil
is that more clear?

wow that was clear! thanks for taking that time to explaining it all over again for me hahaha
yes, i understand more of it!! but still, i'll be so scared to screw this up =S...
hum...i need to by some good spray, i only got a cheap one that i'm afraid to use because i once ruined a drawing because of it... i'm a bad sprayer, i guess...
well, i can sure tell that i like the results of this method! 'gonna try it someday! and thanks again for taking the time to explain it to the poor dumb me , hehehe

No, I sympathize, it is a complicated method to understand at first...just keep in mind each one is sort of like an underpainting, one more finished that the previous, and the sureguard retouchable varnish (a photographer's varnish) separates the steps so you can use these different mediums. Watercolor wouldn't stick to acrylic if you didn't do this, for example.
