Description
This rocky shore is made of millions of little clams (Coquina) that died, piled up for 100’s of thousands of years, and were cemented together. It’s very atypical for the sandy Florida coastline and the St. Augustine area is a good place to see it. I really like how the waves have carved organic sculptures, in mini slot- canyon like forms.
Although stone made from shells doesn’t seem very durable, the British discovered it was. For 27 days they shot cannon balls at the St Augustine Spanish fort Castillo de San Marcos. Instead of cracking, the walls absorbed the blows and the British left. The fort has been made into a National Park and they claim coquina is the stone that changed history.
I also observed its durability when I went to South Florida to help clean up after Hurricane Andrew (200 mph winds). Almost all the houses were destroyed in the area I went to. But the one we stayed at was made of coquina and only had a few broken windows.
