I think the point of this work is that it ISN'T being rendered in real time. Most 3D programs have a "shadeless" option which is what this is using. Probably with mipmaps and anti-aliasing turned off for the pixel look.

Very strongly reminds me of the style of Mega Man Legends with the overall appearance. The blend of pixel art and 3-D is one of my favorite aesthetics.
I really love the feel of a flying machine slammed together with a construction machine.
