Description Many years ago, I created a picture of Misty, from Pokemon , which I was rather proud of. In the many years since, of course, I've had a lot more practice at, and gotten some better software for, making these kind of detailed edits and illustrations. I figured it's been long enough that I should revisit the old work and see what I could do with it. What you see above is the result (see link for comparison to the original work). I mostly constrained myself to updating the original piece, so there are some shortcomings that may remain in composition, but I think the piece comes out a bit more aesthetically pleasing now, as well as a great deal more realistic looking, while still keeping that cartoony edge to keep it resembling the original character.

In the original piece, I described it as being Misty, before she met Ash, on her journey past the Viridian Forest on her way to route one, where their original encounter took place. In retrospect, that doesn't quite fit the picture as it was drawn for a couple of reasons. One of the most obvious to me now is that her proportions (both face and body) indicate a slightly older, not a slightly younger Misty. If this is to be fit into the story's canon, this is, if anything, Misty returning home later, if not just returning to the Viridian Forest of her own accord a few years afterward (perhaps to face her fears of bug pokemon?). Still, whether she's read as a teenage anime girl, a younger version, or some kind of AU alt-form, the fundamental goal of showing Misty as an independent character, and a pokemon trainer in her own right, rather than just an attache of Ash et al, remains.

My original piece was created with simulated paint on a small canvas via Nintendo's New Art Academy App on the 3DS, then touched up and enlarged via The GIMP. This update was now made via Clip Studio Paint (Pro version, I think? Whichever the cheaper option is, I don't really remember the version names). A lot of Clip Studio's tools really are better geared for illustration than what The GIMP provides, although I have found myself missing some things since the switch (like labeling the "undo" and "redo" options so you know what the next click will actually undo/redo).
