Description
As the grate slammed to the floor, he knew he was trapped. His only exit blocked off, he slid to the floor in despair. His eyes closed, he felt the floor shake and watched the veiny red glow fade as the lights flickered out. In less than a moment he was consumed by a ball of luminous flame....
The last vision before his demise.

100% photograph. If I edit it a lot, I'd call it photomanipulation.
I saw this on top of a parking structure one night and the combination of the bleak/depressing light and the harsh shadows and slightly awkward exit sign compelled me to take a picture.

Actually, seing an EXIT sign reminds me of almost certain escape way. Therefore i consider the image as way to the exit which you can successfully reach. Only few tiny things may go wrong and prevent you from escaping. I hope you get it... Similar to exit sign in a library, store or airpost - something which helps you to get away from the trouble... Your opinion is contrary to my feelings - it states "desperate", "trapped" and so on. I hope not to offend you, I've just stated my point.

Exit signs definitely do indicate escape. The problem in this case is that time ran out and with the exit near, it was unreachable before a cataclysm occurred. The description of course is merely a narrative used to express how I think about the image, and not in any way fact. You are absolutely welcome to your own opinion.

This is very intriguing to me... When one sees an exit sign, there's usually a door nearby. What I really like about this piece is that the exit is nowhere in sight. It gives an air of hope, but also that trapped feeling as you described in your artist's comment... I love it! Your photo invokes a great contrast between two very strong emotions.

Very in depth analysis! The sign itself gave me the idea for the title, which in turn gave me the idea for the little narrative, which was suited to the picture because it's grungy and dark and a wee bit eerie. I mean, the escape is there, but... it's like... so close yet so far, if you get what I mean?
I really like the lighting and how it accentuates the piece more. I think it's made the piece especially potent in impact through the shadows, and I find it quite cool how they criss cross there, as if crossing out the fact that it's an exit in a more... shadowy kind of way that is unreal, if that makes sense?
The composition is awesome and the framing isn't too bad. I do feel you could have moved the camera lower, but it's a great shot regardless...
I'm not sure I would have gone with green, to be honest. I feel as if you could have changed the hue to fit the atmosphere more, but then that's not as natural, so...

Had I moved the camera lower, I would've gotten the concrete floor in the frame which I felt would be problematic. Compromises. =/
