Description Oh_my_gosh. Two paintings in a row! Am I still...me?!
This is the final product for my class project. It was inked with micron pens and colored in acrylic washes on illustration board. The entire picture wouldn't fit in the scanner, but you get the idea. Some of the colors were super-functified by the scanner (like the darks...aren't actually that dark) and it looked a lot better before I had to shrink it for internet viewing ...so try not to hold that against me.

Thank you so much!
I'd just read Howl's Moving Castle when I was taking my Intro to Illustration class back in school. We'd received the assignment to design book covers for books that we had read and I couldn't resist trying to draw covers for Howl's Moving Castle!

And you're right, Howl should be dramatically flailing, haha. That's much more "him".

Ha ha, well, I did say you made me want to try this scene myself; come and take a look at my gallery and you'll see my take (and I'll admit to being very influenced by this painting which I hope you can take as a compliment and not an offense). He's not really flailing in mine, either - it occurred to me to save the true hysterics for the hair-dyeing scene.

you don't see too many people's interpretations on the book. At first I thought you used prisma pencils but acrylic washes? It's beautiful!

I really love the details on Sophie's face, she looks fantastic. This scene was one my many favorites from the book. I like how Howl looks like he's about to burst into tears.

Feminine Howl...mhm. But Sophie's expression had me laughing, and this scene was always a great one. Thanks for bringing it to life.

wow this is so beautiful! the colours are so rich, and i love the detail youve placed into the background. sophie looks absolutely amazing.
this is my second favourite scene (the first being when howl shakes the castle with his exaggerated sneezes and sniffles). i love the description of howl taking like thirty minutes to pull the giant suit into the bathroom door.
and i love how sophie looks relatively unconcerned--thats so her.

Hahaha! I love that scene!
The book is awesome! As is the movie, though I'm still trying to decide which I like better . . .
The painting is absolutely wonderful, I love it! The colors and the lineart are bot fabulous, not to mention the background. I love it all! *faves*

i agree. The book had little more plot to it also. I was a little angry that they left out one of the sisters in the movie. i do like it a lot though!!!

Excuse me while I laugh my brains out.

Okay I'm black. Love this piece. Love the style, the coloring, and Michael in particular for some reason… *shrug* I like Howl with extra-long hair, although I never thought of him that way it suits him very well. (Although I fear some Legolas lookalike jokes coming on.)

ketari In reply to GoldeenHerself [2006-03-22 05:05:11 +0000 UTC]

Well, this has existed for over a year and not one person has called him Legolas before, so I assume that's a good sign. I'm glad you like it! Thanks!

Howl is hotter than Legolas anyhow.

I know it's been over a year since you submitted this... but oh well! XD

First this I have to say is. Awesome job on the painting. Getting all the details that are in the picture(especially when it deals with hair and shadows). Amazes me I guess.

Second reason why I like this painting because it's from the book and not the movie! I remember the scene too. XD They tried to put an enlarging spell on Howl's suit and it kept growing.. and I'm rambling...

I love how you rendered this scene! It's so great to see some art from the book (I'm looking forward to seeing the movie on dvd and I'm sure it's wonderful, but I still wish there was more book-based non-anime style art out there). You did a wonderful job capturing their expressions (poor Howl looks so disgruntled).

I love the way you have made Howl schmexay. So many illustrations that aren't of the Miyazaki version fail most completely and utterly in that respect.

And the expressions, and the background, and the stuff ...

Love it.

Much love

hehe, that's the scene with the suit-disaster, right? XD
it's cool like I can actually recognize the young sophie from the other pic in the granny-sophie here And Sophie actually looks adorable as an old lady the way you drew her
All the expressions are very cool...can't decide which one I like most... I guess Howl's, it shows his self-pitying personaltiy pretty well. If this was animated, he'd definitely say one of those things he always said in the book like "there goes Sophie again" or "look what you have done!" XD
His nose juts out a bit much though, and his chin looks pretty ...uhm...fleeing in relation to that.
I love all the stuff that's dangling in the background too <3
